Why is Michael Jordan MIA this weekend?

Not sure. I read he was spotted in town this weekend. He hosted a party for his birthday somewhere in Little Village. Has he not appeared at any events?

I started watching video of 2020 NBA draft prospects because the Bulls suck and they're gonna get another high draft pick and this perpetual rebuild has no end in sight (sigh)...

I heard and read good things about Tyrese Haliburton, but my God is he a weird unorthodox player. Kinda reminds me of a guard from the 90's with a really funky shot that is very effective. Advanced analytics loves the guy, but scouts not so much it seems. He's not super athletic and doesn't have a high ceiling, but this draft class blows so who cares? It's so depressing trying to find a good draft prospect with some upside right now.

Mock draft (with sim lottery) for people curious:

I'm already bracing myself for the Bulls to jump into the top 3 this lottery now that there are no particular prizes waiting. I've seen Vernon Carey of Duke play for like 16 minutes and he seems ok but I know nothing of anybody else.

I know very little about Vernon Carey, but watching his highlights he seems pretty solid with a decent shot for a big man. I'm surprised by how low he is going in various mock drafts and predict he'll rise as we get closer to the draft. His weight/conditioning and overall defense is a concern. He is listed as a C, but I think he could play PF as well?

A little similar to Wendell Carter, but Carter has better defensive instincts and a better motor. The Bulls (under GarPax) love Duke players so they might invite him for some private workouts.

I think if you can just get a solid rotation player out of this draft then you've done a good/great job because there are going to be a TON of busts from this draft class...

He’s also been horribly inefficient and an overall huge net negative.

I guess White is having an OK week, eh?

Great month. Not sure if you’re quoting me as a gotcha kind of thing. Even including the tremendous month, he’s still the 35th worst NBA player by VORP (-0.3). At the time of the posting he was in the bottom 5-10 in the league. The point was that he was playing very bad and didn’t deserve to be in the rising stars game. Though in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really matter and why not let the hometown kid play?

Anyway, I really like Coby. As a UNC fan, I liked him in college and was ecstatic when the bulls drafted him. He’s a fun, positive kid and seems like a good guy to root for. More importantly, he has a ton of talent. However, he was given too long of a leash and developed some bad habits early on. Hopefully the changes he’s made will stick and he can continue to get better. I’m mildly worried this is just a nice hot streak, but it seems like his floor is Jamal Crawford/Lou Williams.

Disagree. Cobys eFG% and 3pt % are currently right in line with Jamal Crawford’s career numbers. Crawford didn’t break 10 ppg until his 4th year in the league. Yes, the game is drastically different now compared to then, but Coby is well ahead of where Jamal Crawford was his rookie year. Coby really needs to work on finishing at the rim. He has the speed and 3 point shot threat to consistently blow past defenders but he lacks the vertical and strength to finish. He’ll have to figure out some creative ways, but I’m sure it will improve and his efficiency numbers will climb. They already have with the addition of that midrange jumper.

Do we have different definitions of floor/ceiling? How is the 35th worst player in basketball, worst case scenario, a future three time 6th man of the year with a 20 year career (or a guy who averaged 22 and 20 points the last two years)?
Posted

I think Coby is more than a 6th man. Plays better defense and seems to have figured out how to score a little more efficiently in his first year in the NBA as a 19 year old without a real head coach.

Yes, he didn’t “deserve” a spot in the rising stars game because his numbers were so terrible due to being grossly misused by his incompetent head coach. And also yes, a worst case scenario I see for Coby is he never figures out how to be a consistently efficient scorer and is a streak scorer off the bench and wins a few 6th man of the year awards.

I think we may just have a different opinion on Jamal Crawford? He has 3 years with a VORP above 2 and a career PER of 15.1. He was a great scorer, but gave up a lot of it on the other end and never was much of a distributor. I have higher hopes for Coby than that. Hope he gets a real coach this summer.

Okay, that @boggio_ryan guy is crazy lol. No one thinks Saddiq Bey's best-case comp is Kawhi Leonard or I've never read anything like that...

He's a great shooter and seems like a solid wing defender. I really don't like that many prospects in this draft class and I've watched video on quite a few of them now. I doubt Bey becomes a star level player, but he also shouldn't bust. Villanova has created a steady stream of solid rotation players: Hart (Pelicans), Bridges (Suns), DiVincenzo (Bucks), Brunson (Mavericks) and Paschall (Warriors).

If the Bulls are somewhere in that 7-9 range again I think they should trade down and take this guy. You get an additional asset (lower-1st round pick maybe?) and a solid wing player and knockdown shooter in Bey. I think we all agree Otto Porter isn't the long-range answer at SF, and I really don't like the PG prospects in this draft. I have a good feeling watching this guy and think he's a high-floor rotation player that can help create space for Zach LaVine and Coby White. I believe his draft stock is rising (or was rising) so we'll see what happens.

In explaining why the Bulls are likely to retain John Paxson after this season, you frequently cite that Michael and Jerry Reinsdorf are loyal, and that they believe in his ability to build a roster. If that’s the case, why do you believe Jerry Reinsdorf feels more loyal to Paxson and more strongly about his abilities to rebuild the Bulls than he did about Jerry Krause, who he fired in April 2003 after Krause won six NBA Championships (compared to Paxsons’s zero NBA Finals appearances as an executive)? — Dan B.

The difference is this: Paxson isn’t being retained to have final say on building the roster, but to serve in whatever advisory or consulting role the new empowered hire or hires desires. As previously written, Paxson has initiated a lot of the talk for change to expand and modernize the Bulls’ front office.

This is an astute question, though, because there are similarities between then and now. One difference is it’s only been close to three years since the full rebuild began. Krause had five years between the end of the dynasty and his departure. But in terms of the Bulls dropping in relevance and competitiveness on and off the court, there are some similarities. And that’s why there will be offseason change.

Your question reminds us all of one amazing fact: In 35 years, Reinsdorf has had two lead decision-makers for basketball operations in Krause and Paxson. That’s almost unheard of in sports.

Not sure if this news was shared here, but Paxson will NOT be in charge of basketball operations for the Bulls after this season. I'm not sure if this was his call or the Reinsdorfs, but it's fantastic news for all Bulls fans. It's crazy that in 35 years, the only two people in charge were Krause and Paxson.

Boylen should be fired, Forman should be demoted and/or fired and Paxson should just ride off into the sunset...

We need to hire a young, progressive exec from a good modern FO. There was a rumor the Bulls are interested in Sam Presti, but I just don't see that happening, unfortunately.

Let's hope this is the case. Michael, Jerry, Pax, and Doug basically being like a board of directors is probably an acceptable outcome in all this (as long as Pax and Collins are really hands off.)
