Really? They, IMO, very clearly are valuing staying under the LT over all else.

yes, but cant they get better prospects? I mean, its MOOKIE BETTS for crying out loud. AND David Price.

David Price is 34 years old and due almost $100m over the next 3 seasons. He's averaged about 2 fWAR over the last three years. Even if you bump him to 3 and he gets an NL boost... that's not prime prospect stuff.

Betts is great, and you have him for 1 season: will he be the 10+ fWAR guy from 2018, the 8+fWAR guy from 2016, the 5+ fWAR guy from 2017, or the 6+ fWAR guy from 2019?

Not to mention the 10+ WAR guy in 2018 is when the Sox were found out to be stealing signs and cheating. Betts didn't need any help, but you have to wonder if those inflated numbers were the result of that.

And because of that they're probably about to lose a lot of draft picks. Trading a guy who rebuffed extensions and said he would test the market to help replenish your soon to be handicapped system was the right move, IMO. They can always try and resign him next year, too.

but they're not replenishing their farm. Verdugo will be on the opening day roster and if Graterol isn't he's won't be far off (he was on the Twins playoff roster).

I guess this is what confuses me. Why not trade Betts and Price for all the A-AA darlings you can get instead of Verdugo. Graterol makes some sense since he is still young and cost controlled for some future time.

I also assume they could get someone to bite with prospects. Maybe they couldn't

Price has negative value. He’s owed almost $100 million yet, had season ending wrist surgery and has been between 1.5-2.3 WAR the last 3 years and is like 32. Including him keeps you from getting all the “A-AAA darlings.” I think your view on his value is skewed. It would be like if we traded Heyward with Bryant and wondered why we only got Jean Segura and Nick Pivetta back.

No, I'm saying I wouldn't make that trade in the first place. If I'm trading my MVP I'm not doing it to get rid of a bad contract in Price/Heyward, especially if I'm already staring down the barrel of losing picks because I cheated. I need more prospects....period.

They paid something like $13m in luxury tax last year alone. The penalties get a lot steeper for year 3 over tax. Like the Cubs, I suspect they will be under for 2020 and then go over in 2021 when it resets.

At 3/$55 or whatever the Dodgers will end up paying, David Price doesn’t have much, if any, negative value. I think the lack of return is due to Mookie only having 1 year of team control left. If we decided to not resign Bryant in 2 years, I hope he’s traded now or the deadline at the latest.

The good news is that they avoided paying $13M in luxury tax by paying $45 million to the Dodgers to take David Price away

You forgot to include not having to pay David Price $32M per year for 3 more years. Plus, resetting their LT bill. I would imagine they’ll be right back above the line next year.

If LA can't win the title in a year Houston's been cleaned out by a cheating scandal, Boston gave them their best player just to count money, and the Cubs sat out the off-season just to count money, that would be depressing for them.

I don't think what the Cubs did - or didn't - was much relevant to who wins the World Series.

Graterol, 21, was out from May 25 to Aug. 7 last season with a right shoulder impingement, but recovered to make his major-league debut in September and crack the Twins’ Division Series roster. His fastball tops out at 101 mph, but the Twins viewed him as a future reliever, and the Red Sox evidently agree that he is not suited for a 150- to 170-inning workload, at least not right away.

A revised interpretation of risk is not unusual after a trade agreement is reached and a club sees a player’s medical records for the first time. Teams consider starters more valuable than relievers, which is why the Red Sox might seek additional compensation.

He's definitely going to end up being a reliever, but potentially a very good one if he can remain healthy. Twins marked him as "untouchable" last offseason or close to it.

Looking at how the Angels shape up after acquiring Pederson...their offense is going to rake, but LOLOL at that rotation. Holy hell

I listen to every episode of their podcast, but I haven't gotten around to this one yet. The trade package isn't finalized btw and I think Boston is getting a 2nd prospect from the Twins. Still a bad trade of course.

As if devaluing players worth wasn’t already in ownerships wheelhouse

8:27PM: “Some involved [in the trade] are now suggesting it’s not a certainty,” MLB Network’s Jon Heyman tweets, as the holdup continues to center around the Red Sox, Twins, and Graterol’s condition. Boston is reportedly trying to “reconfigure” its end of the deal with the Twins, “meaning more than Graterol” would head from Minnesota to Fenway Park.

The Twins no longer plan to complete their portion of the proposed three-team trade that would send Mookie Betts to the Dodgers, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune. As part of the trade, the Twins were to send right-hander Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox, receiving Kenta Maeda in return. However, after the Red Sox balked at Graterol’s medical reports, they requested another prospect from the Twins.

I know the only trade the Cubs seem to be interested in is Bryant and we're broke, but any (or all) of those guys from the Dodgers (Pederson, Stripling, Maeda, and Verdugo) certainly would make nice additions to our roster.

Verdugo and Maeda for Bryant and Heyward?

Find a way to add Chris Taylor and it would really be a great deal.
