Yeah, fine. This team is infuriating. Sure they could and should make the playoffs, but I’m okay with a significant shakeup.

2016 was a once in a (possibly) lifetime team. I get that, but 2017 it was “the hangover”. 2018 was “everyone got hurt but we still won 95”. 2019 had a couple injuries, but nothing extreme or unexpected.

It’s the same unit and has a handful of very excellent performances, but is just so up and down. It’s just not there.

Honestly it falls on the entire organization. Ownership tightened purse strings on a team that they make hundreds of millions in profit a year. The front office made poor decisions. And ultimately as Theo said “judge us by what we do on the field”, it’s on the players.

kind of amazing how many times this year I’ve thought “wow this is rock bottom.”

It’s who they are. They are an average baseball team that will look very good some days and very bad other days. We’re 140 games in, we are who we are which is a flawed baseball team with talent.

I just have no idea how Theo managed to build such a flawed team and presented it as a top World Series contender

Just thinking about how poorly Joe managed this game... from having Russell and Almora in the lineup, to wasting the team’s leading home run hitter in a 1-0 game in the 4th, to forcing himself to let Heyward bat in the 8th, all the while Zobrist was apparently available. Don’t tell me he doesn’t give you a better plate appearance, at least in Heyward’s spot - even with his rust.

Good post above by Named After Maddux, but Maddon’s part in all this can’t be lost. A lot of it is lack of on field execution, but Maddon himself has lost us a bunch of games, and made it harder to win in a bunch more.

I look forward to Theo's post-season autopsy and subsequent inertia.

All they're gonna do is bring in a new manager. Theo and co. have backed themselves into a corner financially and the farm system is just starting to climb out of the cellar; I'd bet good money he just plays out the string the last couple years of his contract, assuming/hoping that this team's raw talent/stupid baseball hodgepodge nonsense has a dead cat bounce before he takes off.

I mean we won it all so whatever, but it sure seems like the rebuild kind of failed. I guess maybe I just thought the multiple titles thing would happen easily and that wasn't the case.

Joe has to be gone after the year, but I honestly am wondering if it isn't time for a complete overhaul.

Yeah, we can argue about how successful it was or wasn’t, but we won a title, made 3 straight NLCS, 4 straight playoff appearances, 4 straight 90+ wins (including 3 of 95+).

It didn't fail at all, but intentionally losing 3 years for a competitive window that sure looks like it, charitably, lasted 4 years (I don't see any way these guys do much next year absent huge changes) wasn't quite the idea.

At least 5 years. They suck but they are right in the playoff picture. Doesn’t mean it’s not an incredibly disappointing season but if you put the floor to be considered a successful season as making the playoffs they are being competitive in their competitive window.

Any rebuild that leads to a championship is in my book successful. They bottomed out to build a championship team. Where we failed is in maintaining a contender. Any team that is successful for 5+ years needs to make good moves throughout to maintain the contender. So in my eye the rebuild was inarguably a complete success. It’s the post-rebuild moves that have been a failure.

horsefeathers like this just drives me crazy. Expanded rosters so you don’t need to be worried about running out of guys. I get that there is a defensive component with Heyward but you need to score runs for that to matter.

I miscounted and meant to include this year. Agreement on everything here.
