Caratini has been great this year. He looks like a solid if unspectacular 2.5-3 win catcher. He could probably bring back something pretty legit given the price and control. Maybe the headliner for Whit Merrifield?

 

Or Willson's foot is dead, but that's too sad of a scenario for me to think about.

Maldonado > Descalso (also Russell, but that's a stretch). His presence on the bench means more PH opportunities for Vic or Willy. This could also be part 1 of a 2 part move, assuming Willy is healthy in a couple weeks. If there are teams that believe Caratini can be a starter, he becomes a pretty intriguing trade piece.

I know Monty has been bad and hurt this year but trading him straight up for a rental backup catcher is beyond horsefeathering stupid. I'm actually mad about this. Caratini has been solid as a backup and 2B has been a black hole and the pen is a mess but ok.

Something has to be up. Either Willy is more hurt than missing only 10 days, which with Gryzlo maybe he is, or else Vic almost has to be close to being moved. We have 3 off days in the next 14 days, they could’ve just called up Davis and let Vic start pretty much every game if it was only 10 days without Willy. For as bad and low valued as Monty has been, trading him for just a rental backup C seems selling ridiculously low.

Anger about the trade aside, I’m happy Monty will almost certainly get a chance to start. He obviously has wanted to start for several years but was a team player and accepted lesser roles for multiple years

It's even more maddening when you consider THEY COULD'VE SIGNED MALDONADO IN THE OFFSEASON FOR CHEAP AND DIDN'T.

I will say, with the one trading deadline this year, the Cubs needed to get another decent catcher rather than be stuck with Taylor Davis should Willy or Vic be down at any point the last two months.

It's certainly not efficient, but think ultimately it's about opening up the roster spot more than anything. Monty was like 7th or 8th on the starter depth chart now, and has proven he sucks as a reliever. He was just kinda there taking up space in the pen. Between this and probably a phantom DL for Brach, they can recall Edwards and add a lefty reliever from outside the org.
