They aren’t

They're under .500, but have a +51 run diff and a 3.54 team ERA. They aren't bad

I know there’s a time every year we have to act like they’re a legit threat. But no, they aren’t good.

I don't care enough about them to argue with you, but it's tough to label them as "bad", at least thus far. Time will likely take care of that

Eh pitcher WAR. Not gonna wade into that one.

By what metric should he be judged against the juggernaut Reds rotation then?

I made a passing comment. I don't care nearly enough.

The Reds are good every year? News to me. I expect them to fade down the stretch but only because Votto being mortal takes away their superstar. Bunch of quality ML talent on that club that would have little issue making this similarly boring ass roster lucky enough to have Bryant and Rizzo

Over the last 2-3 now I can remember when they got hot and we have people acting like they’re a thing

The difference is that they have been playing well all year just incredibly unlucky in close games early on. Last year they did get hot after their awful 3-18 start but they were always awful and their pitching staff was really really bad.

This year statistically their pitching is among the best in baseball and they have a number of quality bats.

I’m not saying the Reds are likely to win the division but I think they are good enough to. They’d be 3.5 games out of first if they win today with a RD really close to the Cubs for the season (albeit skewed a little bc the Cubs just got blown out). The Cubs are something like 18-23 over their last 41 games and the Brewers and Cardinals have been treading water most of the season. I expect the Cubs to play better and probably Milwaukee but I don’t think it would be stunning if the Reds managed to win the division.

this team just blows[/quote

Classic case of a starting staff carrying a team the last four seasons. It’s now older and hasn’t been proactively refreshed the last couple seasons as Theo has instead chosen to hang on to his band of launch angle brothers. The HR or bust [expletive] that has led to a 1-3 playoff performance and incredibly streaky baseball is growing increasingly frustrating to watch. Baez and schwarber continue to be near the top of the league in whiffs and the team overall leaves risp at alarming rates. The offensive philosophy of launch angling balls over the shift is “all the rage” right now but it also has resulted in theo’s slow pitch softball team to come home early with a participation trophy 3 out of 4 yrs and sprinting towards a fourth. My vote is on shipping strikeout heavy and solo hr king schwarber out of town along with Quintana for a couple young pitching prospects. I’d then move Bryant for the same at the deadline or in the offseason as there is little chance the boros client signs plus he’ll be nowhere worth the money. A couple traditional baseball hitters and some young arms would do wonders for this franchise. The kimbrell move was stupid in light of the other issues

You are going to need them because this collection of hitters does nothing in the playoffs offensively

1-3 playoff performance exceeds expectations so I’m cool with it

Not really. To have the second highest payroll in baseball and with this collection of talent with the resources they have, I find 1-3 heading for 1-4 a big underachievement. Especially when you consider the tinkering that will need to be done with the staff very soon on top of all the contracts coming due

Since 2016, only two other teams have won a World Series. What the hell is the rest of the league doing?!?!?

That’s irrelevant to me because they don’t have our payroll or collection of players during that same timeframe. I’m just talking about the cub performance. I find the slow pitch softball approach to be a complete fail by theo

Ok, the Quintana trade was bad.

The trade wasn’t bad and I’d do it again even with 20/20 hindsight but he has been a Quixotic and frustrating player to watch

That trade was horsefeathers worthless.

I'm morbidly impressed that someone actually wasted that much time and apparently much needed mental energy crafting the "this first place team should have a fire sale" take.

'1-3 heading for 1-4' is such a nuanced, complex, wonderful take.
