Owners are making out like bandits after their disinterested off season. Gross.

I doubt they did this on purpose, but showing no interest in FA and making it a hellscape for older players is looking real smart right now. Maybe the owners did this on purpose...

Albies agent shouldn’t be allowed to ever negotiate a MLB deal again, that’s horsefeathering negligence to his/her client. I don’t even think Albies is all that good but this deal is garbage. Of course teams are gonna play along and take these deals from idiot agents because it’s “good business” but they’re being snakes here too with idiot agents.

"I doubt" to "maybe" in two sentences....this was definitely part of the plan.

I mean it's also on GMs and Presidents of Baseball Ops making the call and refusing to spend on older players. It's not all on the owners. Teams that are tanking aren't going to spend serious money during FA. Teams are operating smarter and have better projections/models. I wouldn't say that was all part of the plan.

It's all part of the same plan. Improved projections/models have shown that by and large players are most productive during their early to mid 20s, which is also when they are drastically underpaid for what they are providing. Players didn't care about that because good players knew a payday was coming down the road, either because of some unspoken agreement or because of bad models. Now that that future payday is far from guaranteed, players are feeling increased pressure to lock in security whenever they can. The GMs and presidents report to the owners, and are dealing with artificial (for lack of a better word) budget constraints.

The Cubs have been surpassed in both player development and payroll exploitation

Good. These Ricketts scum fucks deserve to be bled like the slippery hogs they are.

Good. These Ricketts scum horsefeathers deserve to be bled like the slippery hogs they are.

They have not been surpassed in revenue generation.

HOT TAKE: Albies is cromulent and deserves a cromulent contract.

HOTTER TAKE: You don't really believe that and just like the word "cromulent" and wanted to use it (twice).

I think he is quite average, I just don’t see the point in him doing this deal even if he is just adequate. It wouldn’t have been overly difficult for him to reach $35 mil just through arbitration years, especially with a rookie year all-star game nod (which oddly matters in arb hearings/pricing).

You're half right

That seems like a particularly I dunno racist? take on what Albies is saying? Seems pretty clear he's saying if he does well he'll get another extension, not that he's too stupid to understand how contracts work.

The options make this a pretty bad deal for Albies, but I don't think the 35 million bit is all that bad. Maybe a bit low, but reasonable considering the caliber of player he is and how far he is from bigger money in arbitration, never mind free agency.
