Each new season deserves its own negativity thread, and this one doubly so.

 

Theo Epstein was never building for sustained success. He was building a small-market Golden Generation plan with some bad pitching acquisitions tacked on to max out the payroll. Three years of tanking, four years of good, now we're back to mediocre again. Happening to win the WS in one of those 4 playoff appearances (two of which needed the WC game) was luck. The farm system can't produce pitching, Kris Bryant's shoulder hurts, and Addison Russell abuses women. The Cubs are owned by part of the elite corporate structure propping up the fascist uprising in this country.

Cubs are getting hammered hard in the national media over their off season, and deservedly so.

 

If Theo's cunning plan was to ask the players what went wrong, are we surprised that they all said "well, definitely not us, boss!" ? Did Theo really think that turning over the coaching staff but keeping the same roster was the magic solution to the 2018 problems?

I see this as a sign that the universe is righting itself. The 2016 Cubs messed up the timeline by winning and now things are coming back to homeostasis. Obviously, it sucks for us, but this is our natural predicament in life as Cub fans. Shitty owners, mediocre teams, Wrigley fun.
