I really wanted the Cubs to make a Heyward trade this offseason (with a team like SF), but I just didn't get the feeling like it was a priority for Theo & Jed.

 

Running it back with just the Descalso and Brach additions was dumb. Maybe taking a step back and trading some veterans and getting some prospects back isn't the worst thing in the world...

I'm sure it was a priority for them. But the likelihood of finding someone willing to absorb a 5/$106m contract for a guy who can't hit and whose value is tied to skills that are likely to decline with age is not great. They might have been able to get some team to take him but they'd probably be absorbing a contract almost as bad to do so, and Heyward probably has more value in 2019 than whatever garbage they'd get in return.

I'm sure it was a priority for them. But the likelihood of finding someone willing to absorb a 5/$106m contract for a guy who can't hit and whose value is tied to skills that are likely to decline with age is not great. They might have been able to get some team to take him but they'd probably be absorbing a contract almost as bad to do so, and Heyward probably has more value in 2019 than whatever garbage they'd get in return.

 

I'd have liked to have had them take on about $70 million of the contract and see if a team would have taken him for 5/36.

 

Great guy, but he's a pitcher at the plate and it just doesn't play well enough.

It is. It’s crazy to think but even just adding a Granderson, Maybin, Jackson, etc type would’ve been an upgrade and we couldn’t or didn’t even want to do that.
