I thought the story about Heyward not being vaccinated was that he had been on the antibody treatment when he had a fairly severe case of covid. Was that made up, not relevant now, or still the case?

I just Googled and didn't see anything to confirm the antibody treatment thing is true. It certainly doesn't seem to be relevant now, or else Heyward wouldn't have been so ridiculously defensive about not being vaxxed.

saw this tweet reply and haven't checked if it's true, but if so Heyward at least has a reason not to (at this point)... messaging still is terrible though

This is going to be an unpopular take but...I might have joined in but these guys got zero credit, zip nada nothing, for their clean record during the meat of the pandemic. The guys who got vaxxed are/were bashed for being over the hill. Like Jason Heyward is a villain now? There is no winning for these guys anymore, we’re in the era of NFLMLB and holy wow is it miserable

He makes a legit point about the fans and is very clearly pro mask. Not sure I saw any masks at all last night, vaxxed or not the fans should be masking

As one Athletic commenter said, the fans should probably be masking, but if a fan catches COVID-19, it won't force several players on our favorite baseball team into quarantine. Being a baseball player sometimes comes with headaches that the average person doesn't have to worry about.

Da horsefeathers is all this.

The smart thing to do is to get one of the horsefeathering vaccines unless you have specific diagnosed medical issues that prevents you from doing so.

The dumb thing to do is literally anything else.

This. I think a lot of people applauded the Cubs for doing such a good job at following protocols and preventing outbreaks before there was a vaccine. Now there is a readily available vaccine. Go get it.

Also wtf is this about using monoclonal antibodies for prevention? There have been a few small studies that looked at this use before vaccines were so readily available, but that was like January and before.

Your logic doesn't add up. Heyward being cautious about not getting it and refusing the vaccine are not related. Who is bashing anyone for getting the vaccine?

His point is a strawman/whataboutism argument that is not legitimate unless he's going into the stands to sign autographs.

Logic?! I can't even follow what the horsefeathers he's talking about. What is Heyward supposed to get credit for? Being old? I really have no clue what he's arguing.

From comments several players have made, we are massively underrating/understating (it’s basically ignored completely) how much protocol these guys have been going through. From the sounds of it, they’re being tested frequently, movements are monitored, etc

Jason Heyward is being paid $21,000,000 this year. The MLB minimum salary is $570,500. Now, if you want to talk about minor league players going through all this and playing for peanuts and getting treated terribly, I'm with you. But no major league ballplayer has any room to whine about being tested and having their movement restricted. They can literally just go get their vaccine and get those restrictions removed. Even the guys making the bare minimum have a level of wealth that the average American can only dream of. Science has shown the vaccines work. Get a shot you millionaire meatheads

I mean look at this situation...He’s getting trashed and the facts as to why he’s not came later

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.

The "protocol" doesn't mean horsefeathers at this point.

The fans are absolutely 100% irrelevant to Jason Heyward's decision about whether or not he should get vaccinated. It was a distraction, to take the focus off of himself, plain and simple.

Guys like Rizzo and Heyward get a LOT of publicity about how great of teammates they are, and how wonderful they are at helping the community. Getting vaccinated is part of that. It's extraordinarily selfish for them to not only *not* get the vaccine, but also to fail to use the platform that they have to encourage others to do so, like Bryant, Baez and Contreras have done.

Getting tested daily is not enough.

i don't recall hearing that at all

You can give Heyward and the whole org credit for following strict protocols/testing/etc last year before there was a vaccine and all we had was trying to follow strict rules and they excelled at that with no player positive tests. That’s over now with a vaccine, which now we can give them horsefeathers for not getting it and especially throwing fans under the bus to distract from their own decisions. Both things can be true, good job by them last year and they deserve a lot of credit and now terrible by job by them with the current decisions/messaging.

This. Look Rizzo and Heyward have spent years building up credibility and are overwhelmingly seen as good character guys so I'm personally not going to start booing them, though their admission does change my perception of them quite a bit. They're still good guys I guess, they just seem ignorant and misguided.

Maybe others disagree and cannot look past this when evaluating their character...I can understand and accept that way of thinking.

Look, I appreciate Rizzo & Heyward helping everyone from pediatric cancer patients to bed-ridden geriatrics. I just hope for the sake of those people that both of these guys stay the horsefeathers away from them if they cannot summon the decency/"courage"/intelligence to get vaccinated.

sogard, heyward, arrieta and rizzo are the ones that are admitting to not being vaccinated? outside of javy, who the horsefeathers on the team IS vaccinated?!

Would’ve lost money on that bet.

His shot coincided with his bad outing/blown save in Pittsburgh iirc and his spin and stuff was down.

Rereading his quotes he totally said the fan thing to divert attention from himself

Yep, which is such a POS way to explain himself. "Hey, I know I'm anti-vax and thousands of fans wear my jerseys and see me on TV, but what about that dude at a Bonnaroo show." Get outta here with that BS.

I gotta tip my hat to Jason Heyward, in an arch-disappointing season filled with awful performances, Heyward is flying under the radar in putting in his worst season as a Cub. Which is difficult because his 2016 was so bad.

Currently at a .599 OPS. Keeping an eye on how poorly he ends the season.

He should be released

It’s crazy that despite his unbelievably bad hitting he still has a positive fWAR this year, albeit just 0.1. He’s still a positive fielder and baserunner. I would consider keeping him if he accepted a very reduced role of 25th man, used only for late inning defense and pinch running. If we’re paying him either way why not use him in a way that gives us value? Also he’s a great clubhouse guy to have assuming he accepts the reduced role with professionalism.

That said, I’m not sure Ross would use him in that way if he’s on the roster. I hate to infer this because his job should be to put his roster in the best position to win but I get the feeling he will do everything he can to make sure his buddy gets every opportunity in the world to play everyday. Maybe I’m wrong…he did eventually release Arrieta, though I think that release came several starts too late and Jake had to give us 3 IP, 6 ER games for a couple of months before the trigger was pulled.

Also, I get that Ross doesn’t make roster decisions like that but I’m sure he had some influence, especially when the deadline happened and there was nothing to play for.
