I thought the roughing call for Brady against Jones was more of a sham. The Rams/Saints call was pretty close at least, Jones just tapped Brady on the horsefeathering shoulder

*but yes, that Brady call was horrifying bad as well.

So that ref, Phil McKinnley played for the Rams...he also played for the Falcons and missed that really obvious targeting call last year that gave Kamara a concussion when the Saints played the Falcons.

Sour grapes I know, but c'mon. NFL refs need to be beyond reproach. You shouldn't get to call a game with teams that you have affiliations with.

Just shut up. The refs blew several calls in favor of the saints.

You can't compare a missed facemask call or hold, etc, with a blatant blown call at the point of attack in that game situation. You guys would be blowing a gasket if that were against the Bears. It was a blatant a miss as I've ever seen, especially given the circumstances.

I absolutely can compare those calls.

watching the replay, Robey-Coleman goes helmet to helmet with Lewis as well, at least at the level that was being called all season.

I wouldn't say I was surprised that part wasn't scrutinized more, because the NFL is still early on the CFB-style targeting calls, but I did notice that at the time.

League office has stated that they missed the PI call AND they missed the targeting call on the same play.

You’re comparing a missed strike two in an AB where a dude grounded out and a missed play at the plate in the bottom of the 9th.

was the Saints WR in the endzone? how can you say it absolutely would have altered the game?

not a great comparison...but yes I would. Every play in any game matters to the outcome of the game. A blown call in the 2nd quarter can change the outcome just as much as a blown call in the last 2 minutes.

BTW, I also did not blame Parkey for the Bears losing. Teams do not win or lose on 1 play

Because a flag being thrown would have allowed the Saints to run the clock down and kick a chip shot to end the game.

Dude, it would have made it first and goal from about the 5 yard line with 1:45 to go and the Rams with only 1 TO. It would have all but sealed the game. The Saints could have run 3 times to take the clock down to roughly 15 seconds and if they didn't score, just kick a FG to win.

or fumble, pick 6 the other way....etc. I feel like NFL referees are all bad and I get watching your team lose when a bad call is made, but bad calls are made across the board. Sucks to be Saints fans today, absolutely

The magnitude of the situation is what made that call unimaginably bad. I've seen that kind of miss by the refs before, just not as the deciding factor for who goes to the Super Bowl.

Not to minimize what was a terrible call...

Since the Belichick/Brady era they have been in half of the Super Bowls (9 out of 18).

I'm beyond sick of seeing them in the Super Bowl, but it was there for the Chiefs. Great comeback, favorable 3rd downs to get Mahomes back on the field. They just blew it in overtime.

How much times would’ve been left if the Saints didn’t stupidly pass on first and third down (yes I know the pass led to PI so it was “smart” in a way)? But if they just run 3 times and kick a FG the Rams would’ve had ~40 seconds and no TOs to try and kick a tying FG?

It’s been a theme on local radio here. I don’t mind being aggressive and letting the most accurate passer in NFL history try to make a play. The Saints blew several chances in that game. Mike Thomas was there for a TD on that drive and Drew didn’t see him.

Yeah, it for overshadowed by the call but Brees was kinda ass all day. Part of why they probably just should’ve drained as much clock and not pass on that last drive, imo.

Assuming every play took about 5 seconds, it would have left the Rams 58 seconds left. Personally, I'd rather try to end the game right there than give a great offense that time to drive 35 yards for a game tying field goal try, but it's certainly close.

The missed facemask call on Goff probably cost the Rams from scoring a TD and taking the lead with 5 minutes left. That's a pretty massive play.

But yes, I would agree it both wasn't as valuable and as egregious as the missed call at the end.
