Manny Machado is gonna get basically the same contract that Mike Hampton got literally 20 years ago, but we're supposed to believe there is no collusion.

Well those that don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.

I’d bet he ultimately gets about what was expected. The optics and process of this offseason sucks and it needs to change how long this takes and the teams crying poor is absolute BS but ultimately it seems guys are getting around what they were projected to (if not a little more). Imo.

Seriously, given the expectations and the stakes, this is the worst offseason in living team history

2004 was way worse. They (had to) blow up the teams from 2003-2004 and you knew the 2005 team had no chance of being competitive. It was a surrender year after two years of relevance.

Us deciding not to be heads and shoulders above the rest of the NL but still very likely a playoff caliber team does not match up to that.

Hell no, this is worse because the roster is built on such a strong foundation and they are choosing not to supplement it because they know it won't hurt their bottom line. Those mid 2000s teams were built on such a shoddy foundation that choosing to not keep adding old FAs to the roster was just the latest in a long line of indignities.

this is ownership treating the team like a bank. why spend 250 million on a player when we're going to make $x amount of dollars regardless.

I mean, it's treebird's joke account so.....

i still don't know if you really think it's him, and i still don't know if it really is him. i thought jersey was just joking about it because of the name, and it doesn't look like tree's work.

No teams paying 80+ million for 2.3 war over 8 years + 2 additional seasons when he didn't even pitch.

If someone could prove collusion by the owners, would that fall under the Sherman Anti Trust Act?

Violation of the Sherman Act is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $10 million for corporations, and a fine of up to $350,000 or 3 years imprisonment (or both) for individuals, if the offense was committed before June 22, 2004. If the offense was committed on or after June 22, 2004, the maximum Sherman Act fine is $100 million for corporations and $1 million for individuals, and the maximum Sherman Act jail sentence is 10 years.

No idea how you would prove it without someone just fessing to it. Even if owners were stupid enough to leave a paper trail of emails or texts, I don't know what grounds you could subpoena those communications.

Pretty sure MLB is still exempt from that. But they’d get some big fines as per CBA

Right. Baseball is excluded from the anti-trust laws. The logic is that if you want actual competitive baseball games, you have to have some restraints on competition at the business level. So you can’t hire other teams’ players away from them in the middle of the season, for example.
