Back to the baseball side of things, he will make the lineup significantly tougher. I'd have to imagine he'll play against most every righty. With Bryant back soon, the ideal lineup starts to get ridiculously deep:

RF - Zobrist

2B - Murphy

3B - Bryant

1B - Rizzo

SS - Baez

LF - Schwarber

C - Contreras

CF - Heyward

Against lefties you can swap out Almora for Schwarbs and Bote/Russell for Murphy. OF defense becomes Zo, Almora, Heyward.

boom.

I understand guys are slumping in masse, but it's kinda funny to say "starts getting deep" about a lineup that has consistently hit Schwarber and Contreras 6th and 7th, while having two of Zobrist, Almora, Happ on the bench every night when they were healthy.

To be fair, my quote was "ridiculously deep".

Ha. I completely missed that word. My bad.

You know, Murphy has been so bad at 2B, I do wonder if the Cubs will opt to put him at a corner. Joe seemingly prefers to play La Stella and Happ (when he's played infield this year) at 3B, so I wouldn't totally rule that out for Murphy even with Bryant back. Might also depend on if they view a certain position as being safer for KBs shoulder

It’s been discussed and people keep saying his arm at 3B is worse than LaStella’s. Not sure if that’s a fit. No reason to play him at 1B except on a Rizzo off day.

I wonder if we’ll get aggressive with shifting when he’s in the lineup. Like how Javy and LaStella have moved around when they play to put LaStella in the least likely spot the ball will go.

I’m not sure what I’m missing here. The remarks linked suggested that while he has different viewpoints he saw value “investing relationally” with people he disagrees with. That doesn’t sound homophobic at all. Quite the opposite. Totally different mindset than Hader and others.

There aren't viewpoints to have.

He said he disagreed with the lifestyle.

A) It's not a lifestyle

B) There is nothing to agree or disagree to

It's how bigots used to soft touch their bigotry. Nowadays most of 'em don't even think you need to bother hiding it.

I hope you’ll engage me via private message. I’m genuinely interested in deeper understanding.

he doesn't hate gay people, he just knows they will burn in hell for eternity once they're dead

i'm kind of confused about the people not wanting murphy for baseball reasons. i didn't want him because he's a scumlord, but baseball wise this is a huge gift

There are other players I would prefer, namely players that don't play 2B (poorly), but you can't argue with the price.

Worst case isn't he a better La Stella?

Just wanted to read Brett's take, and Bleacher nation comments are a dumpster fire. All out culture war.

Honestly, that's why I put in the (nearly) zero tolerance policy from the beginning. Given how things have evolved since 2004, I'm glad that we took that approach.

I used to like BN, but lately he’s become a doom-monger.

This is how I see it. All these lineups that include Murphy but not Bote are missing the point of this acquisition IMO. If Bote somehow falters, Murphy is a great backup plan; unless and until that happens he’s a nice bat off the bench.

I’d like to see Bote at 2B, Bryant at 3B, Z in RF. Z at 2B, Bote 3B, Kris in RF is fine too.

I can’t imagine that Maddon would allow Murphy near 2B unless it’s mid-blowout.

Yeah everyone, including the Cubs, is aware of how bad defensively he is. He's also been the 12th best hitter in baseball over the last three seasons. I know he got off to an atrocious start, but he's only 33, and has been the 30th best hitter in baseball in the second half this year. Everything else (including him being an horsefeathers) aside, this is an elite bat, and I highly doubt their plan is just to use him as an improved LaStella.

Wait.

Some of you think Daniel Murphy is going to be a bench player?

I don't think he should start against lefties. Against righties, deal with the diminished defense. It's definitely a square peg/round hole situation in terms of where he fits in. But it's a good problem to have, and didn't cost us anything to get there.

This is some sort of cosmic vengeance for Cub fans in the bleachers chanting "Murphy's a [expletive]" at Dale Murphy back in the early 80s.

I think he starts until Bryant returns (assuming Bryant is not actually dead).

Then, I think Bote starts ahead of him, unless or until Bote is found out to not be an actual god.

When Bryant returns, Bryant (as often as he's able), Heyward, Rizzo and Baez start everyday.

That means you have 3 spots for Schwarber, Almora, Happ, Zobrist, Bote and Murphy. I'd say Zobrist, Schwarber, and Bote are your 3 most days.

I don't think there will be many games with a righty on the mound and Bote starting with Murphy sitting.
