I’ll take a series win, don’t get me wrong, but it would have been nice to sweep them. Also the last few weeks they seem to have too many games where they have zilch, absolutely nothing on offense. Not struggling offense, just not even a chance offense

Yeah I hear ya. Offense didn’t show but doesn’t help that we only used Bass, Duensing and Farrell in the pen and all 4 runs came with them in the game

Quintana let 2 baserunners on to start the inning and has to go longer than 5 innings.

Ideally he does but he was clearly gassed. Once he hit 75ish pitches the velo and command went. Guessing the heat didn’t help.

If Bass was the choice that inning if Q got in trouble just let Bass start the inning then. At least give the horsefeathers ass pitcher some margin for error. Don’t make him pitch out of horsefeathers.

Agree

The fact that Bass was in the game in that situation in the first place should signify that the bullpen isn't as rested and available for tonight as we all thought. Taking Quintana out after 78 shutout pitches before the 6th inning would not have made sense.

We've seen Joe use Cishek 20 times this season in that exact spot successfully. If he doesn't have a tired arm he probably got the horsefeathers from Bryant or something and was unavailable.

Now consider the temperature and how Q looked to end the 5th.

Ozuna hit a 40 mph ground ball that the defense botched.

A dumb decision getting a decent result doesn’t make the decision any less dumb

We’ve essentially gone from ‘literally anyone but Bass is defensible’ to ‘Bass pitched as well as we could have expected Strop/Cishek to pitch but I’m mad that he was the guy anyway’. I wouldn’t have been angry with Strop or Cishek there but the variables working against it don’t make me think it’s black and white. Yelling about which reliever gets the first out in the 6th inning of a regular season game is basically never going to be a binary good/bad decision.

No, Bass is indefensible in that spot against that part of the lineup. He pitched as well as we could expect him to pitch, which is badly. It mattered in this game which I think is more important than tomorrow's game. Oh well, it won't matter in the long run we'll just have to clinch on September 20th instead of the 21st.

However, looking at tomorrow, I almost wonder if Joe used the guys he did since he'll probably need 5 innings from the pen tomorrow with Chatwood going. I don't agree with that line of thinking but I can certainly see it playing a role.

Yeah Q was done. He pitched his ass off but he was done.

Walkwood tomorrow has to be a factor

He hasn't all year though. He sucks the 3rd time through the order and nibbles up a ton of pitches to the point where he can never go 6. That's not the type of dude you trade an Eloy for.

And this game clearly isn't on Quintana, just saying in general.

Lol since 2012 he's been worth 24 fWAR and has been the 10th most valuable starter in baseball. That's exactly who you trade a 19 year old outfielder for if you can.

A guy with Eloy's profile defensively and with the position he plays will have to really hit like JD Martinez to be what Quintana is on an annual basis. 2 corner OFs have been worth more WAR since 2011 as Quintana. Those two players are Stanton and Harper, so yeah, you make that horsefeathering deal every time.

I generally like Mendoza, but that's just silly. We're just as talented as all of those teams except maybe Houston and the gap isn't large enough to where we can't beat them in 7 games.

And also, not that it is an easy path by any means for us in the NL. But whoever comes out of the AL is going to have some battle wounds, you’d assume, since there’s 3-4 elite teams and could quite easily enter the WS like us last year enetering the CS coming off the DS vs the Nationals.

Oh no! There are so many good teams in the AL! How are we ever going to beat... 1 of them?

Sure those teams are only a handful of games better than the Cubs over less than half a season and they play in a league where more than half of the teams are not making any effort at being competitive whatsoever and the NL is currently winning more interleague games despite the inherent disadvantage they have in AL parks but hey who can fathom a 7 game series not going their way?

It's a stupefying narrative.
