It’s not confidence, it’s just mostly common sense knowing this is a good team. The constant complaining and doom boonering isn’t a great look on you either. Did u even enjoy just winning 5 in a row or were u just waiting for the first loss to make complaints?

well expectations used to be higher than getting excited about a 5 game win streak against bottom feeders following a 5 game losing streak

i'm just sick of the cubs constantly being worse than they should be

For the millionth time, they've won 292 games the last three years, been to three straight NLCS, and won the World Series.

What the horsefeathers are you talking about?

well we've already discussed how the 2017 season was oddly disappointing, and how we were supposed to be great again this season, so we don't really need to do that again. you're lying if you say things haven't been on a downward trend since the world series, but i understand that there should be more leeway since they've accomplished so much

but really you guys should at least admit that bitching about game thread bitching is just a different (less annoying) way of venting frustration over the cubs losing games

quintana is tough to watch right now, but i think he's going to be fine. i'm more concerned about darvish. really interested in seeing tomorrow if the time off helped him any.

but what i really want to see improved is the defense. they had a stretch of clean games last week, but now they're back to sloppiness all over the field over the past two games. i do expect it to improve, because they have strong defenders all over the field, but it's been frustrating.

intentionally misunderstanding stuff like this is part of the reason i get annoyed at faux confidence. things were never going to be as good as they were in 2016, but we all thought they'd be better than they have been since then. they're not as disappointing as i;m making them out to be, but it's been a struggle to feel good about them since then.

I like the difference in opinions and moods. I like that there are calm and confident people like Duker and Cubswin11, but I also like the venting and emotion displayed by 17. It would be really boring if the entire season was just, 'None of this matters, the Cubs will win the division." It's fun during the season to talk about the here and now.

The Cubs have a decent record, but when we all spend the offseason talking about how bad ass they are going to be, some people here get impatient and want to see it now. There have been some nice moments, but really, on May 14, my team has been sort of blah and boring for the most part and not a bad ass version. It will probably come, but maybe it won't. I guess that's what makes the season interesting.

I get venting and that’s fine but it’s just oddly weird to me when the venting seems like legit thinking this team isn’t good. In this individual game, yes there was some suckiness. But what do you think is going on that makes this team suck and be on a “downward trend” that you can back up with stats? It just seems so over the top to me to think the team sucks.

Venting to me is being pissed a hard hit ball from Kris didn’t win the game or some of the stupid/bad defense. Not claiming doom and gloom that this team sucks and will always suck.

You being self-aware doesn’t make the tantrums with every loss easier to read.

it's the game thread and the cubs are disappointing as hell, go get a haircut without tipping if you don't like it

They’ve won 5 of 7, get a grip

They've won 0 of 2. PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How am I supposed to interpret it when your words were literally "you're lying if you say things haven't been on a downward trend since the world series"

Um, sure, we went a whole year without winning the World Series. Let' all turn into jamfan!

the downward trend thing was more about the organization talent level than the actual results. it feels like we've had some moves that are blowing up, we have a couple young guys who are a disappointment (mostly russell), and some of the guys we let go (because we had to) are looking like mistakes. it just feels we went from completely loaded to just being in pretty good shape. maybe we should have expected it, i don't know.

but honestly, the rotation is worrisome because of how much they've invested in it, and how much we're counting on these 5 guys beyond just this year. if they continue to suck, it's going to be really hard to find assets to fix it.

The 2016 Cubs went to the All-Star break with a .602 winning percentage. The 2018 Cubs are 2 games going differently from that pace. This stuff is not linear, they aren’t digging themselves any holes in the division, and there’s little reason to think they’re a fundamentally different group than we expected in the preseason. Having to reiterate this every time the Cubs go 48 hours without a victory is incredibly tedious.

because i obviously was talking about the trend in regards to expectations, while already taking into account the inevitable regression we were going to have

after the last 2 offseasons of puffing your chest and penciling the cubs in for high 90s wins (while completely dismissing everyone else in the division), i think you understand what i'm talking about. the gap between us and the rest of the division has gotten smaller than you thought it would, quicker than you thought.

honestly reading all this "cubs are awesome, the end" stuff is half the reason i post all this horsefeathers

Since the World Series, the Cubs won 92 games (a feat only topped by 5 Cubs teams in probably all of our lifetimes). They won a division title (a feat matched by 6 Cubs teams in our lifetimes).

They are 21-17 and 1.5 games back of a team who is not very good. They've actually played much better than that, ranking 2nd in the NL in run differential. their Pythag record and BaseRuns suggest they should be some 9-10 games over .500.

They are loaded with an incredible amount of young, position-player talent. They won you the horsefeathering World Series.

Forgive me if I don't feel your pain.

whatever, you guys sound like horsefeathering robots half the time. we were all hoping for a much better start than 21-17

I get the sense from fans I know IRL that there's some angst, specifically, that the Cubs apparently aren't the juggernaut that the Astros are showing themselves to be. I've tried talking some fans off the ledge to no avail.

36 hours ago the Cubs were playing at a 95 win pace. Taking a moment to not tie every frustrating thing that happens in a baseball season as some sign of tragedy or ultimate disappointment is healthy perspective, not being a robot. It’s not never getting upset, it’s understanding that the frustration you feel in the moment is not indicative of the larger whole.
