Of course, without the Yu signing, Theo would've signed another starter that year or the next using the money from his contract.

Yeah it would have been the next season based on Theo's comments about taking money from next year's FA budget to sign him, maybe we would have signed someone like Kuechel and had money to spare compared to the Darvish contract. But we desperately needed a TOR pitcher and for the last 1.5 years Yu has been pitching like an ace so I'm satisfied with how it ended up.

Oh, I agree. I like the signing. He started the contract a little rough. But he’s definitely been a TOR guy. And seems like a great guy and great teammate.

Something with scoring happened, ERA is now at 1.86 behind only Bauer in the NL

I think they charged Bryant with a throwing error retroactively and it turned 1-2 ER (was originally ruled a hit) to unearned runs.

Of course there’s a stupid ass stat from the horsefeathers at baseball prospectus behind the reasoning

its almost he was like 'oh crap i was the only one to leave darvish off, how can i justify it', then scrolled through fangraphs and BR until he found a stat that made darvish look relatively inferior.

I'm not necessarily against voting for dominant relievers for Cy Young in a normal season, but absolutely should not be under consideration in a season like this. 27 innings? You are giving him award consideration for 27 strong innings? Come on.

I'm not clicking the link because I don't want to reward him, but BPs stats thought deGrom and Nola were better than Bauer:

So if you're going to say "BP told me to do it" then explain Bauer at #1.

I don't think Bauer was a bad choice, I just don't understand how Bauer was such a slam dunk over Darvish by the voters. Can anyone explain it to me or is there no explanation?

To some extent it was groupthink amongst the writers.

To some extent is was that Yu's worst start was his first one. So for a good part of the "season" his numbers didn't look as good. So he wasn't thought of as one of the front runners until close to the end of the year. Then his second worst start was next to last; the opinion at the time was that those four runs against Minn probably knocked him out of Cy contention.

It's all stupid narrative driven stuff for the most part.

Yeah, that was my issue with it. He says he likes using DRA but even though Bauer was worse in the metric than deGrom and Nola, his 1.73 ERA (which he admits is flawed) stood out while Darvish’s 2.01 didn’t. Just illogical. If you’re going to discount Yu for only facing crappy Central teams, you have to do the same with Bauer.

And Devin horsefeathering Williams, obviously.
