9/23 World Champs (The Professor) @ Vaunted Brewers (Looking For More Pitchers) 12:05 PM FOX

Even if they won their next 2 games and the Cubs lost tomorrow and the Cubs lost 3 of 4 in STL, the Cubs would be 1 game up with 3 to play. So yes even if the Cubs go 1-5 in their 6 games (including today) and the Cardinals go 5-1 the Cubs will still be in a situation where they are overwhelming favorites to win the division with a weekend to go.

The goal is the same as the Brewers series, win at least 1

I'll feel a lot better if the stupid Pirates stop letting the stupid Brewers and stupid Cardinals steamroll them, and actually get a win tonight.

Hopefully this isn’t a trend but let him blow saves now

One blown save and the worry is it’s a trend? Lol I’m not Davis’ biggest fan but this is a ridiculous fear.

the cardinals series is going to be scary, don't lie

i'm not even a little bit worried about the cubs not winning the division

Davis has thrown 130 pitches in 7.1 innings over the last 8 days. That seems like a lot.

I know this is the stretch where you should use your best reliever a lot to seal a playoff spot, I just don't agree with him going to a second inning today

Man, doesn't that translate to the dude throwing only something like 18.whatever pitches an inning? Booooo-hooooooooooooo.

Pretty heavy workload for a reliever. Again I agree with the usage to this point but didn't think he should have gone out for the 10th. Maybe it's just random baseball that he gave up 2 rockets to 3 batters but after throwing as much as he did this week that could also be a reason why

Nah. Our magic number is 5. The Cards have 2 games left against Cole and Taillon and then 3 against a Brewers team they may be jostling for a Wild Card spot. We still have three against the terrible Reds to finish the season.

If we win 1 game against St. Louis, the season is effectively over. Even if we get swept, it's like a 50/50 chance. And we aren't getting swept.

We're 4.5 up with 8 games left. We'd practically have to lose every game the rest of the year to blow this.

Not at all scared. My irrational side would rather see his first blown save in a pretty meaningless game vs the playoffs.

"Heavy." He's basically, what, throwing 5 pitches more than would be ideal?

Think about it this way..the Red Sox are up 4 games over the Yankees right now and I look at the standings and don't even consider that a race anymore, it's just waiting for the inevitable clinch to occur. Anyone that is even remotely worried about the Cubs blowing the division right now is basically worried that a team that has gone 43-23 since the break is going to randomly completely collapse over the last week of the season, as well as have the 2 teams closest to them be nearly unbeatable over that stretch.

In my defense I live in st. louis in 2011 and 2012 so I was there I'm peak Cardinals rally out of nowhere..thank goodness for the even year Giants.

Sorry for saying the series will rise a tad in importance. Didn't mean to cause debates.

I thought the keyword in the initial post was "tad."

Like a win today (or tomorrow) meant even getting swept in St Louis probably doesn't cost us the division and winning just 1 would all but lock it up. I understand numbers. I would not say that I am the least bit worried that we don't win the division, but sometimes the worst team in baseball sweeps the best team in baseball. I actually just wish we weren't playing them as that would "greatly" increase our odds. From like 98% to 99.5% or something.

Yeah, I'll be scared if it gets to the point that we need to be scared. Right now, in order to get scared, you have to assume that we lose tomorrow and the Cards win the next two. And there's like a 15% chance of that happening. So we're already being doom boners. And then we basically have to assume that we get swept in 4 games by a team whose ass we just kicked.

At this point it feels like worrying about the Cardinals being a threat to the Cubs is basically worrying because the Cubs lost A game, which is just goofy. It's the busted-ass 2017 Cardinals we're talking about; they're going to need the Cubs to lose a LOT more than that to have a shot.

I also used doom boners instead of ninnies specifically for you, Sofa. I've been more of a ninny fan, myself. But I'm willing to broaden my horizons. So I'm going to try them both and see which sticks.

AND EVEN AFTER ALL THAT WE GET THE horsefeathering REDS

"Ninnies" sounds like you're an old lady chasing away street urchins trying to steal your pie from the windowsill.

the remaining cubs games are all in driving distance for me. i need to decide whether i want to drive down when the magic number is 1 (or 2 if in St L)...i'd have to pull a dick move and take the day off work very last min

For the record: I am FAR more worried about "doom boner" being lost to the dustbin of history than whatever the horsefeathers the Cardinals do.

doom boner has kind of naturally faded as we lost the doom

granted, that makes any doom boner at this point more of a true doom boner, but only the ninnies will have them

To put a finer point on this, there are 17 outcomes left for the Cubs (8 games) and Cards (9 games), we need 5 of them to go our way. Even if you concede the series between them as a sweep for some reason, you only need 5 of 9 with the Cubs hosting the Reds 3 times and the Cardinals facing Cole, Taillon, and the Brewers. The division is done.

I think "ninnies" and "doom boner" are both fine terms with important distinctions between their ideal use cases. It shouldn't be one or the other.

I think doom boner was one of the first terms that I took from this site into the real world. It is effective at meetings. Didn't it start as a way to describe Kyle?
