I forget the exact date of the injury but IIRC (Duke cited the date a couple wks ago) it was some time in the last week of May. If we draw the line at 5/26 that gives him 162 PA before the injury and 162 PA after.

Before: 261/352/458

After: 184/280/270

It sure seems like this dude should have stayed on the DL and not just protected against LHP. We all know how tricky wrist injuries can be. I refuse to believe age caught up with him after he posted a 380 OBP as a 35 year old, and has been having a rather great year defensively at 2B. It's probably safe to say that that wrist won't heal this season if he keeps trying to play through it, but it's also possible that it won't heal in time for the playoffs even with rest. But I don't think we should be taking that chance.

Do you think he should be shut down for the season? I know it would mean a whole lot of Seal Boy, but at this point, Zo has been immeasurably uglier to watch. It's obviously doing no good trying to play through it.

To me, he's more important to this team in the playoffs than the regular season. If sitting him until mid-September will get him ready for the playoffs, they should do it.

Since the All-Star break, Zobrist has been pretty much back to normal from an OBP perspective, and he's also getting plenty of day's off. The power still isn't there, but I doubt that's something that anything short of an offseason or simply more distance from the injury is going to help with.

I also think back to last year where he had that blazing hot May then a rough few months before picking it back up toward the end of the season and playoffs. Maybe he's just a really streaky hitter

Yeah, I don't know how wrist injuries work. It's obvious his injury sapped him of power and is still affecting him. But is playing through it going to make it worse/take longer to get fixed? Or is it something that's just going to take time regardless of if he's playing or not?

So, I posted this at the All-Star break:

Zobrist injured his wrist on a swing on May 26.

Zobrist in 158 PA through May 25: .266/.354/.468

Zobrist in 81 PA since then: .113/.213/.169

Zobrist average exit velocity through May 25: 87.3 mph

Zobrist average exit velocity since then: 84.5 mph

Going a bit further, his ground ball% was 48.7% before injury, with a 17.7% line drive%. BABIP was .290. Career average 45.7% GB% and 19.3% LD%. Pretty close to what he's always like. Last year, GB% was 48.0%.

After the injury until the break, his GB% was 57.4% and LD% was 14.8%. BABIP of .115.

Since the break, he's hit .243/.337/.351. BABIP of .265. GB% of 56.9% and LD% of 10.8%. But, his average exit velocity is 88.7 mph.

So, he's hitting the ball harder. Actually he's hitting it harder than he was before injury and harder than his 88.1 mph average of last year. But, he's still hitting a horsefeathers ton of ground balls and hardly any line drives, like he was right after the injury.

Maybe a glimmer of hope? At least he's hitting it harder than before his DL stint. Possible the wrist is affecting his ability to get the ball elevated still, though.

Zobrist didn't play enough innings to reach 'qualified' status at 2B by either Fangraphs's or ESPN's threshold. He appears to be 200+ innings short of that threshold.

Miraculously, advanced metrics like Zobrist a lot more than regular ones. His UZR was 2nd in the NL at 2B among players with 500 Innings, but fielding percentage he was 6th, and by range factor he was 15th.
