I know I'm not the most excited person about this trade, since We Got The Whole 9 has been beating this drum since before the season started. But, I'm pretty excited about it, mainly because Theo is showing he isn't horsefeathering around and also because the prospect cost was so low. Candelario blows. And Paredes is a fatass 18-year-old in A-ball. They can both kick rocks.

Wilson is really good. And he's under control for another year, too. Just a solid trade. I think it will look less boring when he comes in throwing gas in his new uniform.

btw Miggy has been horrid since heading to Toronto. .091/.231/.182 in 39 PA. Him running his mouth turned out to be a pretty good thing for us. Avila can actually hit. In fact, he's crushed the ball this year, despite struggling of late. Might be a decent lefty pinch hitter or even a World Series DH candidate if he's hitting well as we go on.

Wow. Love it.

Wilson for this year and next helps a lot. Avila is the veteran catcher they needed. There was no room for Candelario on this team, and Paredes may turn into something is 3 years, but with Baez and Happ on the squad, he very likely won't be missed.

Like the Quintana trade, this is the classic your players are more valuable to our team and our players are more valuable to yours.

The Cubs pad an already good bullpen by adding another team's closer (something a lot of other teams are trying to do but haven't yet) and have him under control for 2018. Wilson isn't Andrew Miller, but he's still real good. Considering what the Tribe had to give up for Miller, I'd say the Cubs did okay.

They're now 5 deep with really strong options out of the pen.

Wade Davis

Carl Edwards, Jr.

Justin Wilson

Pedro Strop

Hector Rondon

And 3 deep in the rotation.

Lester

Arrieta

Quintana

with Hendricks possibly re-proving himself over the 2nd half. That'll work in the playoffs.

Who's spot does Wilson take on the 25-man? Grimm back down? Maybe a made up injury for Uehara since he's been kinda bad lately? We wouldn't cut Duensing, would we?

Duensing has been pretty good. Grimm will go down, come back on 9/1.

Never forget

Agree that Grimm probably gets sent back to Iowa to make room for Wilson, and Caratini for Avila. What about the 40 man roster? Looks like someone is going to have to get exposed. Candelario frees one spot up, but someone's going to have to get dropped to make room for two inbounds. One of the fodder pitchers in AAA? Underwood? Maybe someone on the 40 man ends up magically on the 60 day DL?

Are they not at 39 currently?

Unless I'm missing something somewhere... losing Candelario takes them from 40 to 39, so they need to drop someone else to take on both Wilson and Avila.

I'm guessing Aaron Brooks DFA, but I guess it could always be someone like Frankoff, Floro, Leathersich, maybe Hannemann (woof). That's 5 candidates.

This offseason going to need to make room for (5) Tseng, Maples, Alzolay, Clifton, de la Cruz, maybe (3) Charcer Burks, Jason Vosler, Jose Paulino. I guess (4) Matt Carasiti, Chesny Young, Daury Torrez, David Bote could be candidates too. De la Cruz & Paulino might be too low level/not enough SP innings to worry about adding for this draft.

Leaving Free Agents (7 not counting non-tenders) open a few slots I believe: Lackey/Arrieta/Davis/Jay/Uehara/Avila/Duensing

I'm guessing a mysteriously timed injury.

No one is going to call this move boring when Wilson gets us out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the 9th, and then Avila pinch-hits for him for a World Series winning walk-off HR

For the 40 man, it'd have to be a mysterious injury that puts someone on the 60 day DL.

Brooks makes the most sense. He's having a brutal year and all three of Frankoff, Floro and Leathersich have passed him up to be promoted at times this season.

I'm not as high on Wilson as some here are but given that we gave up no one of consequence, I'm happy with it.

I'm thinking we'll see some Willy in LF down the stretch.

An injury that requires the 60 day DL coming out of nowhere would be quite suspicious, unless I am understanding the 40 man rules incorrectly for minor leaguers.

i'm a bit bummed to see Paredes go, but this is exactly the type of trade to use Candelario on. pretty happy about this. there's so much depth that even if two relievers randomly die like Strop and Rondon did last year, there are enough other options that Maddon shouldn't feel forced into a situation like last postseason where he has to ride someone every game.

Between adding Wilson, Rondon pumping gas at 99 mph again (out of nowhere), Stropy being solid Strope (figuratively and literally) and even people like Grimm looking impressive yesterday when called upon. All that coupled with Davis and Montgomery and co. Does this make the Cubs bullpen best in baseball? top 3 bullpens?

Oh, and lackey didn't suck out loud and Hendricks and Arrietta were really, really good last start (and more than one start for Jake) - our pitching is going to be a juggernaut and come playoff time. wow, this is going to be a really, really fun rest of the year.
