Excellent news. Would love to see them add one more starter so we can dump Lackey but I don't expect that to happen.

Dont need a 5th starter in playoffs. I can see the concern about next year's Arrieta replacement but it's not a must have at this point

So, what's so great about Wilson

I know it's not the best way to look at it, but he's 18th in MLB in relief pitcher fWAR since 2015 and inside the top 25 or so since 2014. He's good. Plus he's controlled though next year. It might not be sexy or well known names, like David said it's kinda boring, but the trade helps and reduces the margins of errors/failure if there's injuries or regression with Willson and/or the bullpen the rest of the way. It also lets us have a pretty great bullpen to go to in the playoffs as early as the 5th inning/earliest sign of trouble and have elite options every inning.

Justin Wilson and Alex Avila would be a great haul

This is silly. Wilson would be a huge piece for this year and next year and they're not subtracting anything from the roster. He could have a bigger impact on the playoffs than Verlander. Verlander could always still be an August addition.

it's a backup catcher and our 3rd (maybe 2nd) best reliever.

it's a nice get, but make no mistake, it's boring. booooooooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring.

If you told me a month ago that Theo was going to add Q, Wilson, and Avila.....I'd have been ecstatic. Oh, and without touching the ML team.....

So yeah, I'm ecstatic.

yeah, there’s nothing that exciting about this at all. does he make the bullpen better? marginally. does Avila make the lineup better? maybe. I don’t give a horsefeathers about Jeimer, but this isn’t some huge victory

it's so weird when fans act almost offended by smaller trades, as if their time is being wasted or something. it's even weirder when it happens a couple weeks after the same team just made a huge trade for a TOR starter.

They won 114 games and a World Series last year with a similar roster but until they got a setup man and a backup catcher they weren't in the WS conversation this year?

imagine if we hadn't needed to have (or had) happ turn into a significant part of the mlb roster...

Okay. I don't see a high leverage reliever for the next year and a half that strengthens the whole bullpen as boring. Joe Smith and Tommy Hunter are boring. If we were expecting to add an everyday starter or didn't get Quintana I would get it, but this move is about what I was hoping for. I'd still like Verlander but that can still happen and there are a lot more variables with that one.

Who's spot does Wilson take on the 25-man? Grimm back down? Maybe a made up injury for Uehara since he's been kinda bad lately? We wouldn't cut Duensing, would we?

There's actually a part of me that thinks Happ gets moved in a Sonny Gray deal tomorrow. Theo gonna Theo.

Duensing has been pretty good. Grimm will go down, come back on 9/1.

I can't imagine that happening at all.

Echoing you, but Grimm to Iowa or someone conjuring a DL stint seems like the best bet.

This also highlights that it's real unlikely that they get a future starter that requires an MLB roster spot tomorrow(e.g. Gausman). If that person is optionable like Butler was then sure, but that narrows the field for that type of addition.

I could see it, with other like Zagunis, Caritini and filler and maybe even Grimm. He's knocked down in the pecking order, they just lost 2 relief pitchers. He could be a kinda buy low guy, he's shown flashes, if they gave him the closer/leveraged role for a future trade. Go to a 6-man rotation most of the rest of the year or tell Lackey he's only gonna start every other time through the rotation.

Would be nice to get it done without Paredes, but I understand other teams like good players, too. I feel nothing for Candelario.

I just don't see the point, at least not now. The Cubs already have 4 quality starters for the playoffs and Gray doesn't move the needle much. I could see them being willing to deal Happ in the off-season to replace Arrieta, but there is no rush to make that deal now.
