Watch the Cards get Vogelbach, call him up, and he hits 50 home runs by the end of the season.

you're a good 2-3 years behind on your nsbb memes

the cardinals just suck now

Good deal for the Cardinals...Mike Leake horsefeathering sucks, has a 7 ERA over his last 10 starts and they get out of the 3 years and $53 million remaining on that ridiculous contract.

Are they clearing money to make a run at Stanton in the offseason? Or...Jake (please dont let my dreams come true)?

was it really a ridiculous contract?

I guess not, he was a 2-3 win pitcher annually. I just remember mocking them because that was what they used their savings from not resigning Lackey and Heyward on so in my mind it was ridiculous but I guess quite reasonable looking at the value of a win. It might be ridiculous now however since he's only been worth 1.4 wins in his almost 2 years as a cardinal.

it's really not a bad contract. it's just not a good one, either. Since it takes up a fair amount of payroll for them and he provides such mediocre production as 1/5 of their rotation, I was really hoping they'd be stuck with him. I believe he's also lost a fair amount of velocity and there would be hope that he'd get even worse in the future.

He hilariously becomes a .300, 40 HR guy in every season of The Show that I play

Leake's contract wasn't going to sink the team, but his value was always as a strikethrower and not someone with dynamite stuff, so he has more risk than most in his decline years as well as in a HR happy hitting environment.

It sounds like the Cardinals are eating ~12 million of the 3/53 he's owed after this year.

EDIT: Rosenthal says they're paying 17 million, which sounds a lot like they paid Leake down to 3/36 for the Mariners and are covering his 2021 buyout.

With the odd timing of the Leake trade, it kind of makes you wonder if the two are connected- perhaps a salary dump to make room and/or acquire a prospect to deal.

The Cards are 5 games back and have 8 more against us and 4, including today, against the Brewers, and split the rest of their games against the Giants, Padres, Reds, and Pirates.

Anyone want Juan Nicasio? For free?

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/anyone-want-a-good-reliever-for-free/

Juan Nicasio is on waivers — but not the kind you’d think.

The Pirates have placed the reliever on irrevocable outright waivers, according to sources, meaning any team can claim him and assume the roughly $600,000 remaining on his contract without giving the Pirates anything in return.

Sounds like they are doing this to save $600k. FWIW, he has been worth more than Wade Davis this year in terms of fWAR (or any other Cubs pitcher besides Jake, Hendricks and Lester)
