Almora over Baez is a good move tonight. Wainright's out pitch is his curveball, one of the pitches Baez has the most trouble with (.185 AVG against). Plus Arrieta gives up a lot of fly balls, so good outfield defense is important.

Wonder if this is a sign of Zo's role this year. Not to say that he's not the usual starter but he will be given even more rest days than last year.

Yeah if he/the roster stays relatively healthy and productive I bet he gets 135-145 starts. Also, even though it's early I bet most games around off days he sits out at least one of them.

i thought of a good pejorative nickname for heyward, how long does he have to be shitty this season before i am allowed to try it out?

you might be right...i had forgotten about the jake/montero thing

in that case, my best guess is russell, heyward, montero for 5, 6, 7

Is there a world where Miggy catches Jake every 5th day (I'd prefer Kyle, but whatever), Schwarber catches Anderson/Monty every 5th day, and Willson gets the other three? Or is Schwarber catching only in late game situations? Does Miggy get more than 20% of the starts?

I can't imagine Schwarber being in any kind of regular catching rotation, barring injury. I know they've tested him a couple of times now, but I really can't imagine a situation where he'd be considered a starter with any sort of regularity unless Contreras got hurt or something. Especially given the quality we have at the position in Contreras and Montero.

I pretty much thought Kyle is the emergency 3rd catcher more or less. If something did happen to Miggy or Willson, wouldn't the Cubs think about bringing up Caratini instead of messing with Kyle playing back there for an extended amount of time?

I'm just going with their recent history. They have tended to be aggressive with these types of decisions so I'm never surprised when they are.

It seems like they've been testing his limits with catching so far to a point where they might have more in mind than just using him there in an emergency in a given game.

When the hell did you move to St. Louis from Seattle (or wherever exactly it was in the pacific NW)?

A year ago, I made a bunch of posts about it.

just kidding, it was a month ago

So a month in St Louis feels like a year? I believe it.

Five years in the metro east felt like a lifetime.

I actually traveled to Arizona to heckle him all winter while he was working on his swing. I used the time much like Heyward used it -- to try out new material and see what were the really deep cuts.

Completely forgot that we can stream CSN games on the NBC Sports App. This is awesome, I was gonna miss the start of this.
