Listening to the radio highlights, Hughes deftly points out what a great job Contreras did running the bases. To get to 3rd on Heyward's blooper to left and then to score on the safety squeeze is fantastic baserunning for anyone, never mind for a catcher.

Almora, however, remembered some sage advice from Cardinals first baseman Matt Carpenter after hitting a single in the seventh.

 

Carpenter told Almora that balls hit to the middle of the field tend to fade. Almora kept that in mind as he retreated to the fence with the help of coach Brandon Hyde, whom Almora said positioned him perfectly to get to the ball.
