Why change extra innings? Baseball has the best "overtime". They say position players pitching like it's a bad thing. I love all the potential quirks extra innings give us.

The Cubs played 13 extra inning games, and 6 of those were 10 or 11 innings. They played a total of 37 extra innings, or about an extra inning per week or so. The Dodgers had the same number of extra innings. The Yankees and Red Sox played 31 extra innings combined all season. This is a solution in search of a problem.

I'm in favor of speeding up the game after it goes into extra innings. The only time it may lead to sac bunts is if the visitors don't score in the top half... which is usually what happens if the home team gets a leadoff runner on anyhow.

I'll put it another way--the rule doesn't really bother me. And like I said before, I'm interested to see what the data shows from testing.

This sounds like a terrible idea for a non-existent problem. If you're already into extra innings, any chance of shortening the game by any meaningful measure has long since flown out the window.

If the score was tied 0-0 entering the 10th with one pitcher (or pitchers) throwing a perfect game, would that go away since there is now a runner on base? Would the runner who gets to go to 2nd have an official at bat, and would their on-base percentage increase? This opens up an unneeded can of worms. Besides, part of the fun of baseball is all the quirks of extra inning games. If this is seriously on the table for MLB, I would rather see the game end in an official tie after 15 innings rather than introduce gimmicks like this.

The "no pitch" intentional walk proposal is also another gimmick that I don't like, since it would eliminate plays like this:

The rates for sac bunts and IBB in extra innings is already a good bit higher than innings 1-9, and that without automatically putting a runner on.

I'm fine with the intentional walk rule but the extra inning thing is dumb. I think it would okay if the runner on 2nd started in like the 13th, 14th or 15th inning. But not right away.

I have always loved the chaos of long extra inning games and would hate any change to the extra innings format. This is a really awful idea, but I don't see it ever getting serious consideration for real games.

So many people trying to solve non-existent problems.

Once a game goes extras it's a treat and fun. Speed up first 9.

Yes, exactly. Plus if you start an inning with a guy at second, arent you just gonna IBB the next dude to set up a double play? I doubt this lasts through this season.

If you want to "fix" extra innings...which isn't really broken...my idea has always been this:

Let teams start the batting order at the top each inning in extras. That way you can avoid a 7-8-9 spot inning in extras. And in the NL you won't have as much need to pinch hit for pitchers. Otherwise, business as usual.

what the what?

why is there any interest in completely overhauling the game in extras? Extra innings are not an issue.

I'm amazed anyone has actually ever taken the time to think through these "solutions"

this horsefeathering commissioner is "progressive" in all the wrong places and traditional in all the wrong places

all these horsefeathering stupid laughable rule changes are being considered in the name of speeding up the game, but unifying the rules in both leagues (and eliminating the travesty that is having to watch a pitcher hit) is seemingly a non-starter

pitchers strike out so fast it really helps the pace of play.

he'll probably just abolish the AL DH instead

The people that can't pay attention for a full baseball game aren't going to give a horsefeathers when you pat yourself on the back for shaving off 10 minutes a game.

Yes. I can understand this rule in a short tournament that doesn't matter like the WBC but not for regular season MLB games. Give the NL the DH and you won't have to worry as much about running out of pitchers, if that's the concern.

I happen to love it when a position player comes in to pitch.
