they are also going to play in a 30,000 seat soccer stadium for 2 years

I thought you were making some joke that I didn't understand. Nope, they are really playing in a soccer stadium for 2 years. How could the NFL approve that? Pretty sure there is some sort of requirement to play in a stadium with a minimum capacity more than 30k

the last priority the NFL has is butts in seats situations. they don't give a F about it in relation to what matters most.

they got a sweetheart stadium situation, they get to flood the LA market, they open up the San Diego market for the next "we're moving" threat. and they get a big relocation fee from spanos. They don't care that the least paid attention to team in the league is going to play in a glorified high school stadium (or downsized high school stadium in some instances).

True, but I genuinely believe the NFL was trying to convince Spanos to stay in SD. Whether that was because they wanted the Raiders to come to LA or they thought it was more valuable to remain in San Diego I don't know.

I'm trying to find information on how soon Spanos can sell the team now that he's moving them to LA. I heard from someone he can't sell the team for 15 years after a move, but I can't find anything that says that. I'm pretty sure that if there is no requirement to hang onto the team after moving them, he will have it sold before they ever move into Kroenke Field.

The guy is a total douchebag. He could have easily worked something out with the city, but he hasn't negotiated in good faith ever since he started talking about moving the team after Sterling sold the Clippers for $2 billion.

There is still the possibility of sharing the Coliseum. There are field issues to contend with because the soccer team plays at the same time as NFL, so there is no guarantee that the soccer team can have the NFL tearing up their field several times over the course of a season.

Also, the Chargers changed their uniforms in 2012, and you can only change them so often, so the thought process is to keep them as the Chargers for one more season. They would much rather rebrand completely if they could, from what I've read.

This is a pretty interesting article. It doesn't paint a very pretty picture for an LA/Charger relationship. Where is the hoopla in LA today? My Facebook feed is littered with a lot of hate and anger today directed at Spanos.

I live in LA and for side money I Uber. So I get to talk to people of all walks of life. I usually prod just a little to see if they are sports fans and have found that pretty much everybody thinks this is a terrible move by the Chargers and don't really give a horsefeathers about them. They were rightfully excited to get the Rams back but couldn't care less that the Chargers are coming.

But I'm pretty sure if they were getting the perennial playoff contenders of a few years ago, that would be different. The city is full of casual fans just waiting for a bandwagon to jump onto. But the teams suck so they are certainly fighting an uphill battle

The NFL owners can still block this move, and they actually should considering how this whole thing has gone down. The following is a quote, but sums up this entire mess:

"They are leaving a city they don’t really want to leave and one that doesn’t want them to go. They are moving to move, to a city they don’t really want to be in and one that doesn’t want them to come. Or, at best, doesn’t care."

The other owners make a lot more money if SD moves rather than gets a new stadium, something like $600 million divided between all the teams.

I don't think they can block the move can they? I thought they basically gave Spanos a year to exercise an option to relocate to LA at an agreed upon relocation fee of $650m. I assumed that meant the approval was given when they extended the option to the Chargers.

Yeah no one wants them and they are likely to have a hard time getting committed fans to fill up the stadium for years. But Spanos will be long gone from ownership of the Chargers by the time it really hurts them, after the financial windfall from moving, revenues from the new stadium, raise in value of the franchise due to playing in 2nd largest market, etc.

Let's assume the NFL doesn't want to add teams, what teams could legitimately threaten and go forward with leaving for SD/what teams could SD try and lure in with a stadium package? I can't think of many other than 1 of the LA teams after a few years of nobody going to their games? Jacksonville? Cleveland?

The LA teams won't leave. They will be making money regardless of how many fans show up.

Jacksonville, maybe someone like Tennessee could mess around with the idea of leaving. Buffalo?

raymond james is coming up on 20 years old, the fan base is not all that great and who knows what the glazer family is up to

I think the Jacksonville owner just spent $100 million of his own money for improvements on their stadium. Not sure how long ago that was, but could impact how soon he'd be willing to up and move.

The Jags' owner has been pretty open about being committed to Jacksonville.

Until the NFL opens up the possibility of a team in London.

Why would San Diego give a relocated team a stadium deal when they would t give the Chargers one?

San Diego isn't an individual person acting in a vacuum.

No, but the Chargers offered the city some very city-friendly proposals that got turned down. And they've been trying for years and years
