We already have a closer with some potential injury concerns - why give up a guy like Soler to acquire another one?

one of them might get injured

That's fair... definitely value in depth.

I also think that it'll be something more than just Soler - look what it took to get half a season of Chapman last year. Obviously Chapman is going to cost much more, but the difference in Torres->Soler is disproportionate to the difference in Chapman->Davis.

I'm pretty worried about trading assets for a closer with one year of control and forearm problems. Obviously they'll look at medicals but still.

Yeah. If this trade comes to fruition and the Cubs give up anything of value, I will be less than thrilled.

i'm more annoyed at the unwillingness to spend money on jansen than anything if this happens

Seriously.

I'm gonna extend the FO more than a one-month grace period after bringing us the first World Series in 108 years but that's just me

You aren't wrong but I'd rather pay Jansen than deal for Davis.

i mean i have been one of their most vocal supporters since before theo was even hired and that isn't changing realistically ever. i'm allowed to not like a move (or rumored move).

I'd have been reluctant to give Jansen 4/64. But seeing as Melancon just got that, Jansen could easily land 5/75. Don't even want to think about Chapman's cost.

Jansen is probably giong to get more than that and Melancon has no bearing on that

I'd jump at 5/75

Like you said in the other thread, maybe the new market inefficiency is not giving years to non-Jon Lester pitchers. Will take more prospects to make it happen but it could be a sustainable way to work if you eventually get some pitching out of your system.

I have to think this was far more complicated than a 1:1 deal if it's become this much in doubt.

Not when Davis has cancer of the forearm and Soler has AIDS of the hamstring.

Trying not to get down on a deal before it happens, but between the talent likely headed to KC and that this likely means the Cubs wont be spending any notable money despite a huge increase in revenue, I'll just say I'm prematurely disappointed.

I just figure it's medicals

In Theo we trust but I dont know why we dont just pay Chapman or Jansen. They are a huge difference maker when playoff time comes around & we dont have to trade assets for either.

The org has to be practically printing money, even Bloomberg has an article out of the Franchise being worth 4B soon.

I just don't see Soler having much value. Decent, but not yet great production, with bad defense and hurt constantly. Unfortunately, I think Davis may bring MORE than just him, even with his forearm stuff.

Not a Soler fan, but definitely preferred dealing him for a young SP.

He's like schwarber without the ability to hit or slight chance of playing catcher on occasion.

Franchise value isn't directly correlated to actual current revenues.

Has anybody actually reported its likely Soler. If Davis is a FA next year and has injury concerns it better be like Candelario & Caratini. Maybe Sczur.

Sure but I doubt they are hurting on revenues & dont even have an insane payroll either.

Not hurting doesn't mean happy to spend $80 million on a closer.
