Which doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things because if they don't move another $20+ million this will be their 3rd consecutive year over and the penalties start getting really ridiculous.

EDIT: And they just blew most of that on Joe Kelly.

The Dodgers were under the tax line last year. Only Boston and Washington spent above the CBT.

This has to change in the next CBA, right? This system encourages high spending teams to spend less every other year.

That’s the point from the owners perspective. A de facto salary cap

Yeah, working as intended.

What’s the last major win by the Players Union? This has been a gradual move in the owners direction for decades and the players extended Tony Clark as Union leader. I’d expect it’ll continue to move in the owners direction moving forward.

They didn’t have room in their budget to sign free agent outfielder Billy Hamilton to a one-year, $5 million contract, so how are they going to suddenly find room for a player making at least $35 million a year? And the last the Cubs checked, no one was calling to take Yu Darvish and his $126 million contract or right fielder Jason Heyward, who has five years and $136 million left on his deal.

ROFL we can't get Harper because we didn't sign Billy Hamilton?

Tony Clark is working for the man. Send him to some negotiating classes for God’s sake. Or surround him with some good attorneys. Jesus.

That’s the same logic the idiots Rogers and Mooney used when we didn’t sign Chavez. “How can the Cubs not have spending issues when they can’t afford 2 years and $8 million for Chavez.” Complete ignoring that maybe in early December not giving a 36 year old RP 2 years and $8 million is portably the smart thing to do and not jump at.

Tony Clark is no longer negotiating. MLBPA is getting aggressive because the players finally realized how much they allowed themselves to get screwed the last time around:

Why is Meyer a big deal? First, because he quite literally wrote the book on sports law. But Meyer is far more than an academic and author (though that would be impressive enough in terms of credentials). Meyer, a partner at Weil, Gotshal, and Manges LLP, is a trained trial lawyer with more than 30 years of experience in contested litigation. But it’s the nature of those cases that is relevant here.

and

In other words, Meyer is, by just about any metric, on the short list of the best trial lawyers in the United States and very likely the world — and he has experience turning around labor disputes for unions. In 2016, the National Hockey League’s union hired him to handle their legal matters in the midst of ongoing litigation and disputes with the League. Before that, Meyer was the first to win free-agency rights for players in the NBA, then beat the NFL’s free-agency restrictions in McNeil v. NFL. In other words, Meyer is the only trial lawyer on the planet to have won the right of free agency for two of the four major North American sports.

I’ll take boxes he White Sox don’t check for $500, Alex

i mean those are all things that if the white sox don't check, neither do the cubs lol

If the White Sox are actually serious about signing Harper, is anyone at all concerned about them blowing past whatever largest offer the Cubs end up with, considering their irrational and petty hatred of the Cubs organization?

It's about 10% that and 90% I don't trust the Rickettsssssssssssssssssssssssssssss to not get their cowardly, greedy asses kicked in by a fluke baller Reinsdorf appearance.

If they get him I'm 99% sure it's going to be because they offered him the most money by a large margin (like $75-100 million more).

I view the Cubs as a far better "location" draw than the White Sox in terms of Wrigley and just generally the stage the Cubs are on vs the White Sox and also don't the White Sox have some of the worst ST facilities in all of MLB? Or am I confusing them with someone else?

Don't they share a fairly new spring training facility with the Dodgers now?

Yes, they do. Camelback Ranch in Glendale. It's fairly new, so not sure how it compares with Cubs' ST facilities.

He would likely bankrupt them. Even if he doesn't, they won't be able to put enough talent around him to win.

Though it’s entirely possibly that the White Sox are the front runners, it’s more likely that Scott Boras is using them to light a fire under the usual big spenders.

I can't imagine a big spending GM/owner getting all hot and bothered about missing out on a free agent to the White Sox. This isn't Steinbrenner and the Red Sox or Mets in the 90s/00s.

I don’t think it’s the threat of losing him to the White Sox, it’s putting out a team that has money as being really interested to drive up the price and expedite the process possibly. The White Sox get to act like they’re relevant to their fans to drive interest because they were in on a premier FA and “are close to being relevant.” Their season ticket renewals are probably due around now, doesn’t hurt to dangle the Harper/Machado apple out there for fans to renew under the assumption something big might happen.

While I agree this makes sense, I can’t imagine the Sox doing it if there was ANY chance they would ultimately lose out to the Cubs. Any other team, yes. But losing to the Cubs is not the happy ending you describe.
