Seems weird to be upset about the most optimistic piece of Cubs/Harper information that's come out.

Cubs not out, Harper wants to be here.

If the Cubs know Harper wants to be here, wouldn't it be smart to put out what they've been putting out for negotiation purposes?

Didn't we decide that Loxas was a questionable source?

So far the optimistic reports are from Plesac (not based on actual news just speculation), Dicaro, Charles the Cat and Tom Loxas. The pessimistic reports are from everyone else.

Well than it is even weirder to be upset about it then.

Levine and Bernstein too have had more optimistic reports. Altman from Cubs Insider has also said optimistic things lately but I’m assuming whatever “source” he has is the same one Loxas claims to have (which I doubt either really has one for good or bad info) but him and Loxas have changed their tune. Rosenthal seems to go back and forth and Mooney just seems to want to be a doom boner since he’s been at the Athletic.

Bottom line is I don’t think anyone really knows what we are doing, just like nobody had the Nats and Corbin. I’m going to hope and latch on to the positive stuff when I see it until I don’t have too. Especially since Dicaro and Bernstein have been right on stuff with Theo here over any of these other people (including national guys).

I think it's weird to think that the Cubs have to scramble to make it work to "fit" Bryce Harper in to their self-imposed budget....WHEN HE SUPPOSEDLY WANTS TO PLAY FOR THEM...is good news.

Meh, I'm still not putting much stock in all the media reports.

If Harper wants to be here (and it certainly seems that he does), it makes a lot of sense for the front office to act poor and hope he'll lower his demands to make it work.

I refuse to get outraged when everybody is doing exactly what I'd expect them to do. I'll wait and hold my outrage until he signs elsewhere.

Every single time they’ve wanted a player, they’ve gone over the top making a pitch to him. They’ve never once played hard to get, because that would be dumb.

The Cubs are the only team that knows Mormons hate to be wooed.

How many of those players had waged a multi-year hint campaign that they really, really wanted to be a Cub? How many of them were positioned to get the largest contract in sports history?

None of them fit the special category you made up ad hoc to special plead this case, correct

Why can’t it be they are making an over the top pitch while also playing it down publicly? We never really knew of the Lester and Heyward interest until it got close and after the fact about how they pitched it. It’s not like Theo took out a front page ad in the tribune the day after the season ended to woo those guys, everything was secretive then too and our interest was played down.

What if they have done/will do that over the top pitch? We didn't really know about the Lester/Heyward/Ohtani pitches they did until after the fact. I doubt money even comes up at those things anyways.

edit: ha, me and Cubswin said pretty much the same thing at the same time

And they didn't hand him a blank check, and I'm pretty sure they didn't even offer him the biggest contract.

They also didn’t tell everyone they couldn’t afford him.

The Otani courting was also very public as it happened

Their interest in Lester was wide-open and public so long before he hit FA that it was basically tampering

Other teams were rumored to be more in on him during FA I’m almost certain (Braves for sure and maybe the Giants and one or two others). We also got the “Cubs will check in, but has to be their numbers/terms” type talk. It was far from being a given publicly outside of our dear friend NoCode on here.
