That is not a very positive article.

I didn’t take it to be positive or negative (Mooney admits there’s mixed signals about us being in or not and if we have financial constraints). The article basically is just rehashing things that have been out there but not confirmed for the last month. I also think Mooney saying the Smyly move and not re-signing Chavez is a for sure sign we are strapped for money is a bit of a leap as well. Not giving a 36 year old RP a 2 year deal and finding a way to dump a guy coming back from TJ with no clear role and to minimize Hamels cost (in a vacuum) doesn’t necessarily mean we are poor to me.

are we just going to gloss over the fact that the White Sox big gun in wooing Harper is JIM THOME?

Indians legend Jim Thome who grew up a Cubs fan here to tell you to sign with the White Sox

I just realized that Passan and/or 670 article said the White Sox met with Bryce in Vegas in November and their stupid video board thing that got leaked was just something they filmed to bring with them for it (it wasn’t part of an in person pitch in Chicago).... but there were rumors/reports he was in Chicago that weekend to presumably meet with the WS because of that picture leaking going in to the weekend (which isn’t when they met we now know) and there was also a report he was at a Blackhawks game that weekend and Heyward was also there via his IG (though not pictured with Bryce)....... what if he was actually in town to meet with us that weekend and we’ve been laying in the weeds this whole time (since we now know he wasn’t in town to meet with the WS that weekend but likely was in town)?

This would have been right on the heels of the Cubs are broke MF’ers reports and would jive with a potential Theo/FO disinformation campaign to throw teams off our scent to then go meet with Harper that weekend.

See, @Cubswin11, you too can become a Cubs hotstove Twitter personality. Just use a cat avatar and you're set.

I wouldn’t possibly go public on twitter with what I just laid out (and is definitely true) in fear of that if it got found out too soon it could put signing Bryce in jeopardy. I’ve probably already said too much on here.

it's time for some game theory

Seriously though, would the Cubs having or not having interest in Harper change anything in terms of other teams pursuit?

The argument I've seen/made(though not the only one), is that if the Cubs really want Harper, but need to clear a Chatwood or Heyward-sized amount of salary to afford him, then it makes some sense to downplay your Harper interest so teams aren't even less willing to take on the salary you want to give them.

The only thing sadder than this offseason is sad Urban Meyer sadly eating a sad Papa John's pizza:

Mully (on the Score) just asked Levine point blank about all the uncertainty with the Cubs money and fans thinking they're going for Harper and blah blah.

He basically answered that they've all been trying hard to get a read on it from the Cubs as far as whether the money will be there and nobody can get an accurate read (I'd consider that uncertainty a good thing compared to the way it was being reported a month ago). Went on to say a bunch of stuff we know (i.e. Harper is interested in a big city and loves Chicago so they will always be considered players until they're not, and that that's also why the Sox might have a chance if he finds their young core attractive enough).

As much of a moron as Levine seems to be about actual baseball, he has always seemed pretty plugged in to me, so I was glad he didn't shoot it down, at least.

I just can't see the White Sox thing; they're not going to be good for a couple of years even if things go exactly right.

Bryce grew up dreaming about playing for the Yankees, I can't see him playing for a second division type team.

I think stuff like this gets overblown. I believe that this could be a deciding factor for some athletes, but in my opinion this was a view held by Bryce Harper the professional baseball fan, not Bryce Harper the professional baseball player - and there is a big distinction there, obviously.

Once these guys become veterans and settle in to this being their career the old fan allegiances fade and don't matter as much. Right now I think he will choose a team that offers him the best combination of: winning, money and fun. I dont think franchise's history will factor in as much but I coul dbe wrong of course
