To make a deal for Harper, the Nationals would have to be overwhelmed and get everything they want -- a front-line starter and more -- a source told Kurkjian.

He's not going anywhere. The Nats are gonna hold out for too much. I think they're just doing this so they can tell fans "well we tried".

Is there really anything to gain from making a show of trying to trade away your franchise player?

I just feel like if they were really gonna trade him, they'd have started this last week or something...let some bidders really push the price higher. Putting him on the block this late, with a huge price tag...it just doesn't feel very serious.

I'll probably be proven wrong in a few hours....I'm terrible about trade predictions.

There isn't actually a block where you put up your items for auction at a certain time. We may have just heard about this in the media yesterday, but it has been mentioned for at least the past week.

If anybody had any interest in trading for Harper, they probably would have at least made inquiries in advance. Not to mention, Washington is only 5.5 out of a wild card spot and they know they had to wait for the last possible minute to actually pull the trigger, if they pull the trigger. They've lost 2 in a row and if they won those 2 maybe they don't even think about it.

Per FG, Brewers are projected for 88 wins, and the Diamondbacks are at 86 for the two wildcard spots. Nationals at 52-53 currently would have to go 34-23, or play at a .596 clip the rest of the year. And that's ignoring the Braves, Cardinals, Pirates, and Rockies. The FG projections still really like the Nationals, having them play out the year at a .579 pace, but it's an uphill climb.

If somehow we could convince Kershaw to opt out after this year and pay him 6 years/185-200 million, we might be better off than Harper at 10yrs./350 million. Kershaw certainly fills a bigger need than Harper, especially with the emergence of Bote possibly moving Bryant to the OF.

There's no way I'm paying for Kershaw's decline phase when we're already stuck with Lester's and Darvish's.

Give me Harper all the way.

Weird timing for this since Harper has been back to slaying fools for a month now.

Also weird to be pondering moves of this magnitude because of Bote.

Yeah, no kidding. .939 OPS since July 1, 1.069 OPS since July 15

you mean the going to be 31 year old Kershaw that already goes on the DL at least once a year?

Persistent back problems tend to just kind of go away as you get older right?

yes. would you like to see the scars I have called my tramp stamp as proof that we only get better?

Off-season... Sign Harper, trade one or two of Addy, Happ, or Almora for the best starting pitcher you can get, and sign one of the big pen arms, since the class is loaded. I think this can be done and keep us under the top tier of the LT.

I don’t know why but I get especially pissed at Cub fans who think Harper will break the Rickett’s pocketbook.

They horsefeathering own entire city blocks and a billion dollar company that is not the Chicago Cubs in addition to owning the Chicago Cubs who are worth a billion dollars x3. The only thing that will stop them from spending is peer pressure from other billionaires.

I'm pretty sure the Ricketts don't give a horsefeathers what the other team owners/billionaires think of them. An understated story during the CBA discussions is the tension and bad feelings between the owners of big market teams vs. the small market teams. The owners in small markets resent the ownership groups in big markets and always complain about competitive balance and finances and whatnot.

The owners in big markets tell them to shut up and be happy with the extra draft picks and revenue-sharing checks they receive. They always come to some kind of agreement but the bad feelings remain.

I'm pretty sure the Ricketts will spend whatever it takes to get a talent like Harper if Epstein really wants to sign him.

I get more annoyed with the “If the Cubs sign Bryce how can they afford to re-sign Hendricks, Russell, Schwarber, etc.”. Who cares he’s Bryce horsefeathering Harper. Sign him now and figure horsefeathers out later.
