Why does everyone keep lumping in Dempster with the likes of Billy Williams, Kerry Wood and Ryno? What exactly did he do that makes him a part of Cubs lore?

A legendary Harry Caray impression amirite?

Maybe it's his general jackassedry like that impression that makes me dislike him so much. But as far as pure Cubs baseball resume, why then are we not similarly celebrating Kevin Tapani? Jon Lieber?

Notable pitchers with more career WAR as a Cub than Dempster (outside of the obvious ones):

Zambrano

Sutcliffe

Holtzman

he was with the team for like a decade. what's the big deal?

1. He's annoying

2. There have been better players

3. There have been bigger fan favorites

4. He's being mentioned in the same sentence as two HOFers and a guy who arguably pitched the best game in MLB history

5. Celebrating him as an all-time Cub implies that we just love his Harry schtick.

Yeah, again, dude spent almost a decade with the team, did well, still works for the organization and everyone around him seems to like him. Sure, the impression got real old, real fast, but I wish the Cubs had more players like that hanging around for shits and giggles. It seems like their ex-player collection has been mostly a barren wasteland forever outside of the handful of HOF guys who have been dropping like flies. The other old organizations seem to have plenty of fan and club favorite mid-tier guys around all the time.

the dempster over the top hate by some here is really odd.

yeah, he's annoying, but that's about it.

I don't hate him and would gladly cheer hard for him at a convention, first pitch, etc. He had a good career with us and was a Cub for 8+ seasons.

I get that he's employed by the team and is around a lot of the guys more frequently than he'd otherwise be. With that said, it's weird to see him mentioned and featured so prominently while guys like Zambrano (10), and even Derrek Lee (6+) have been all but nascent. I would hope that the Cubs would at least invite Aramis to take part in some fan-facing stuff from time to time now that he's retired.

It's definitely not a hatred, but more of a question of why Fowler would say something to the effect of "Man, it was crazy to win the WS and think of all of the guys who didn't win here but were cheering us on. Kerry Wood, Ernie Banks, Billy Williams... RYAN DEMPSTER."

If people hate Dempster so much, why did they name a street after him?

I make that joke every time I drive past or down Dempster Ave.

I always found it funny that several of the streets around Wrigley had the same names as current/former Cubs. Obviously there's Clark Street (Mark Clark or Dave Clark but that's a stretch), Addison (Russell), (Mark) Grace, (Corey) Patterson, (Trevor) Clifton, Wellington (Castillo). It's too bad Gary Sheffield was never a Cub.

i used to kind of like dempster. i definitely don't HATE him, but that half-inning of improv he did this season in character as harry caray was the most god-awful part of the cubs season.

or, as SEXY DEXY actually said...

Then there’s guys like Billy Williams, and Dempster, and Ryno, and Kerry Wood, and on and on — guys who are still around and who had our backs every step of the way. We did this for all those guys, too.

there isn't anything wrong with what he said, and he certainly didn't put Dempster on some sort of pedestal

Different strokes, I guess -- he doesn't belong in that sentence and it's weird af to do so.

That's not a list of Cubs greats. That's a list of former players that were commonly around the team this year.

I know that when he vetoed the Delgado trade, I couldn't stand him. Yes, he's annoying with the impressions. But....The dude netted us Hendricks. Seriously, that alone is enough to tolerate his goofy stuff.

He's the good natured uncle that is nice. Just annoys the horsefeathers out of you if you're around him for more than 15 minutes at a time and more than on holidays. He's family, so just grit your teeth and tolerate the dude.

Put differently, the list of former players commonly around the team this year includes Cubs greats plus Ryan Dempster.
