What a [expletive] joke.

Guess they can make up when they want to apply the rule.

I've seen plenty of challenges requested more than 30 seconds after the play was over.

End of game rules are different. It has to be immediate

If so, that is good because game deciding plays in the 9th or later deserve less time.

That's horsefeathering stupid

They should just adopt the NFL scoring rule. Any walk off play is under review until proven right/wrong. Sure 99% of the time it's a formality but it would cover this horsefeathers.

Best case scenario is Mets clinching on Friday while the Giants and Cards tie for the other WC, right? This Cards win pushes that outcome closer.

With the Giants playing the Dodgers and the Cardinals playing the Pirates, I'd prefer the Giants have a cushion going in to the final series.

Tigers rained out.

Possibly:

Tigers/Indians on Monday.

Tiebreaker on Tuesday.

WC Game on Wednesday.

Game 1 on Thursday.

tigers are 1.5 back from the orioles and blue jays. most likely they need to go at least 2-1 against the braves this weekend, and possibly 3-0. the orioles have 3 games at the yankees (who are eliminated) and the blue jays 3 games in boston (who still have an outside chance at home field through the AL playoffs, and are 0.5 games ahead of the indians for home field in the ALDS).

presumably the indians-tigers game on monday will be abandoned if the result doesn't affect the playoffs. but if detroit needs to win to get into a wild card tiebreaker, or if the indians are within a half game of the red sox or rangers, then i think it has to be played. it's possible that both teams will want to win that game, but it's also quite possible that the tigers will have to play knowing that they've been eliminated, or the indians will have to play knowing that they're locked in to the #2 or #3 seed in the AL. in which case it would be a team playing to win versus a team fielding a lineup similar to what the cubs trotted out tonight.

The umps are allowed to miss it, but Price better hop out there immediately.

Let me preface this by saying that the rule is stupid and it absolutely needs to be changed. That was horrendous.

However, Price was saying that he was waiting for the phone to ring and that he couldn't hear it because the crowd was too loud. That play literally ended the game. What are you doing waiting!? Get the horsefeathers out there immediately. He is a moron.

mariners tried to blow it tonight but held on 3-2. they have 3 games left hosting oakland.

baltimore 87-72 --

toronto 87-72 --

detroit 85-73 -1.5

seattle 85-74 -2.0

national league:

mets 85-74 +1.0

giants 84-75 --

cards 83-76 -1.0

likely playoff format:

cubs home field advantage vs mets/giants/cards

nationals home field advantage vs dodgers

rangers home field advantage vs baltimore/toronto/detroit/seattle

boston vs cleveland, home field TBD

True, no reason to wait to ask. Unless he was unaware where it hit, like the ump, and didn't know that it hit the video strip until bring informed.

Edit: Just got home from work and saw more highlights and talk off this game. Price said 4 umps didn't see it and he didn't see it. So questioned how he was supposed to challenge so quick if he didn't know there was something to be challenged.

The rule is dumb basically. The goal should always be to get the call right. Nobody to blame but the rule.

So, the Reds should be able to protest that game, right? If they wanted to? Because clearly it was a misapplied rule...not the challenge bit, but the ground rule?

Managers can protest a game when they allege that the umpires have misapplied the rules.

If the play in question ended the game, a protest can be filed with the league office until noon the following day.

No. They didn't misapply a rule. They simply incorrectly judged that the ball did not go out of play.

Unless, they could make the argument that the umpires knew it hit the advertisement and incorrectly thought that was still in play, but IDK how you would prove that.

The protest would stem from the fact that the umpires didn't get the Reds 30 seconds to challenge the play.

The people that timed it that say the refs gave the Reds anywhere from 21-28 second before walking off, and its obvious the Reds wanted to challenge since Price supposedly chased down the umpires

To me its a legit protest, but do the Reds really care enough to file one?

I think they'd have better luck protesting the misapplication of the ground rule than they would with the murky challenge rules. But yeah, do the Reds care enough is the question.

Apparently Walt Jocketty said that he's not sure what grounds they would have to file a protest.

The 30 second rule didn't apply there.

Why? Because it was game ending? What is the rule for challenging a walk off play?

Yeah on MLB network Harold Reynolds and the other guy brought up the rule, saying the 30 second rule applies for non game ending plays only. They were both saying how stupid that is.

You have to challenge immediately

So Mets and Cards both win and the Giants are winning (thanks, Brandon McCarthy). Mets would be a game up on SF and 2 up on StL if the results hold, which means the Mets would clinch a WC spot with a win tomorrow.

In the AL, Baltimore and Detroit won while Toronto lost. Seattle's also winning so the odds of some crazyness in the AL has increased. If Seattle holds on, Toronto would be 0.5 up on Detroit and 1 up on Seattle.
