Say Dave Martinez gets the Rockies (or other) job, do you think they offer Ross bench coach? I'm sure he wants to take at least a year off, but it may be to great of an opportunity to pass up.

It's funny how he was terrible last year and then put up 1.7 fWAR this season while playing 1/3 of the games, basically. He definitely wouldn't have been seen the same way if that had been reversed.

But it wasn't reversed, and he hit a homer in his last PA in game 7 of the World Series, so I love him.

I think it's fair to say that most people sort of hated Ross at the start of the season but that, as the season went along, he became more and more likeable and now loveable.

David Ross was the greatest signing in Cubs history, I don't care what anyone says.

It was nice of him to bring his pet pitching buddy Lester too

I was the kind of horsefeathers that rooted for him to retire after last season, and was angry he was still on the roster. Then, Montero gets hurt, Ross is pushed into a virtual starting job for a few weeks, hits the snot off the ball, makes amazing plays in the field, and catches a no-hitter. Then he entered all of our hearts.

For a journeyman like him, how ridiculously amazing is it to hit a home run in your final career AB in game 7 of the World Series.

I was just wondering about that... Has anyone else ever had their final career plate appearance be a WS game 7 home run? I'm thinking Ross is probably the only one...

just saw the interview with Kerry Wood and I wish he would have made it to this team. I think Ross is actually older than he is.

AB, not PA (he walked)

Good catch... That's what I meant. I can't think of anyone that has.

Especially against Andrew Miller of all pitchers.

Yep. Nobody would have believed you if you went back and told the board that he'd get a standing ovation after getting removed in his last home game and that people love him the way they do. It's an amazing turnaround.

It might be a little awkward for Ross to not have any separation from the team before jumping right in as bench coach. It seems like a year away may be important for him to reset everything before he moves on to the next phase of his career. But the premise is flawed anyway, because I don't see Dave Martinez getting a manager job. Likely the only way he leaves is if Joe decides it is time for him to move on.

It's so hard to believe a guy who was an annoyance in his first of two seasons here decided to make this his last, kicked some ass, and made everyone love him while contributing in game 7.

He was only here two seasons.

For the record, I never hated Ross and thought the signing was fine. Last year, though, I just didn't want to see him come up in any big spots. I've liked him since the pickoff vs. Washington.

Yes, I was quite explicit about him being here only two seasons. And his first season here was terrible. He had a .519 OPS. And somehow he managed to get people to forget the first half of his time here and focus completely on this year where he was a good story and didn't completely suck (and actually was pretty good, to the point where he'd be offered a new contract if he wanted it)

My bad. Missed the of.

I was just re-reading that article from The Players' Tribune from earlier this year.

Ross

Haha. I’m not a legend….

Rizzo

You are. That’s why we wanna send you out on top. We wanna win the ring, and then hoist you up like Rocky. Because you deserve it. You’ve been in this game for a long time, and you’ve done a lot of great things.

Rizzo

It’s because you’re a legend!

Ross

Haha, whatever. I’m thinking, Talk to me in October, people. Then see how much you like me.

Rizzo

Yeah, we’ll talk in October. That’s how we wanna end it. Hopefully that can be the last photo on the Instagram account. The ring. Let’s go get the ring, post a photo of it, and when we send you off into retirement, we’ll retire the Instagram account right along with you. The ring can be the last thing. Let’s get it.

Bryant

Let’s get it.

Ross

Let’s get it.

They certainly did.

After the EV call out in Game 5, someone said we'd win the WS with a Ross HR in Game 7 (mockingly). And I said if Ross comes to bat and the game depends on him even getting a hit, then something has not gone according to plan (figured Joe would drop Lester in like the 7th and then have Chapman in the 9th if we were winning). Oops
