If it was Rondon going to the DL instead of Lackey, I don't think that Zastryzny would be the guy getting called up. Zastryzny is the clear answer to 'if you have to call up a starting pitcher from the current Iowa roster, who would it be?'

I suppose Rondon and Lackey could both be hurt, but more likely Maddon cares more about keeping Hector from getting hurt again than he does winning any game in the next 6 weeks, so letting Grimm get 1 out in a meaningless game against the Brewers isn't much of an indicator.

Absolutely. There's a good opportunity to give guys extra rest between outings and Maddon has to take advantage. This is especially true with a guy like Rondo, when you consider the likelihood that Chapman walks and Hector goes back to closing next year.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Neither Zastryzny or Pena are on the 40-man. It currently has one spot open so someone is going to have to come off. Beeler or Brooks could be moved to the 60-day DL. I think that's the most likely move. It's possible they could drop one of Acevedo, Soto or Alvarez, but less likely in my mind.

As far as the 25-man roster, I would think Patton would be sent to Iowa and Lackey to the 7-day or 15-day DL.

We'll find out soon enough...

7 day? Are they worried he has a concussion? Otherwise its a 15 day stint

Uh-oh...this is turning into a stealth injury thread. KILL IT NOW.

Hey anything to get Hendricks a start over Lackey in the playoffs, at least the DS.

The only real bummer is that we will only get a few glimpses of the True Bullpen of Doom during the regular season but that's fine with me if we can get Strop and Rondon 100% before the postseason.

Figure out all the junk you got out there in the next 40 games.

Can Theo and Jed somehow put Travis Wood on phantom DL before the postseason so Joe isn't tempted to use his golden boy again and again? There are approximately 7 relievers and 2 left handers that are better than him now on the roster

He's definitely interesting. He's got a solid FB, that may play as plus out of the pen. He usually sits in the low 90's with it, so opening it up in shorter stints could even see him hit 95-96, which he's done in the past. He's got a solid changeup too. His curve isn't much, so he's likely not more than a swing guy/spot starter, if given a chance to start. But, I'm pretty interested to see what he's got in a pen role.

If his stuff will play up in the pen then it seems like a worthwhile gamble. Can't be much worse than Smith or Patton, at least.

Did anyone see that Strop is already playing catch, btw?

Heard it yesterday on the radio. Sounds like it might be closer to the 4 week than the 6 week timeframe.

Yeah, I posted that in the general cubs thread. Great news indeed. It would be ideal for both hm and Rondon to get a good 1-2 weeks at the end of the year of tune up outings before the playoffs.

Though, he injured his leg, not his arm.

is he sitting down or standing completely still or something?

Playing catch is a different and lesser strain on the legs than pitching. Playing catch to keep the arm loose doesn't necessarily mean that the leg is ahead of schedule.

I never meant to imply otherwise. The report itself is where the nugget that they are optimistic about it being closer to 4 weeks than 6 came from. It wasn't an inference by me.

Does having these guys on the DL on August 31 give us more playoff roster flexibility?

Nah that doesn't matter anymore. Now a player only has to be in an organization prior to Sept 1 in order to be playoff roster eligible

in a way. anyone on the 40 man roster can be added to the playoff roster so adding these 2 new guys to the 40 man makes them eligible whereas they wouldn't have been without the DL moves. (assuming they don't get DFA)

You just have to be in the organization.
