Joe Nathan throws 3 scoreless innings and is DFAd. Joe Smith has given up an ER in every appearance he's made but I'm guessing he's on the roster tomorrow.

I have a lot of sympathy for Maddon in that spot at least, even if I think he handled it poorly. He's without Strop and Rondon - Chapman has refused to pitch in such a situation. Everyone else kinda sucks.

Chapman has refused to pitch in non save situations?

He's said he really doesn't like to pitch in those sort of situations and Joe said he would do his best not to use him in such situations

Lets not get rose colored glasses for Joe Nathan, who had a 2 WHIP in those 3 innings and magicked his way into scoreless appearances

Well, that's HUGELY different than him refusing to do so. Pretty sure if Joe had called for him to come in he would have.

This is where not having Strop or Rondon is going to cost us a game. Rondon needs to comeback already.

A game that doesn't matter.

Doesn't matter? We're not even 15 games ahead of the Cardinals! We should of course rush our second best reliever back. And Strop needs to tough it out too. I mean come on, I'm pretty sure that meniscus isn't even a thing, so much as an old timey buzz word that mothers used to use to scare their kids from running around the house?

Doesn't sound like a refusal. I'd imagine most closers don't prefer to pitch in non save situations

How the hell did the board crash over this silly nothing of a game?

Haters gotta see what's going on

They can take a good, long look at the 13 game lead we'll still have after today.

Yes, I'm sure Chapman wouldn't literally walk off the field, but Joe also is trying to do his best to respect his wishes, its a complicating situation.

Yes. Chapman did state that he doesn't multi inning saves, but when your # 2&3 reliever are hurting, I'm pretty sure he can go the extra mile. If not, he's more of a douche than we thought.

What's complicated about it? Do you think if Rondon was still the closer he'd put him in the game in that situation?

Wouldn't have happene vs. any other team, but the Cardinals tend to bring out the meatiest in people.

It really isn't; the team is short two critical relievers and Joe would be asking him to come in and get the final out or two of the inning.

We're not keeping him anyway and his job is to throw baseballs, while Joe's is to manage the game. He should suck it up. He will pitch outside the 9th in a close game in the playoffs if Joe has a brain, so he might as well get used to it

I wouldn't expect any closer ot be brought into that situation. I just believe that if it's a high leverage situation and the reliever you bring in is as wild as Edwards was, you don't wait to pull him until things get out of hand. Joe got him at least two batters too late for my liking.

You know I'm feeling bitter when I see Heyward get an RBI hit and think "oh NOW you get hits?" Edited by BigSlick
