With Girardi's seemingly steadfast refusal to play A-Rod prior to his release does anyone think there was some incident behind the scenes that we haven't heard about? Possibly even that lead to the release in the first place? Obviously he's not playing well but the Yankees have packed it in too. Got to think chasing 700 would have at least put some butts in the seats.

Probably, I'm guessing ARod complained about playing time and pushed the issue. The Yankees probably approached him about buying out his deal and ARod wouldn't budge so in spite they decided to deny him his 700th HR (unless he signs elsewhere).

This is getting kind of funny now. Girardi said he would let ARod basically dictate his playing time this week after ARod announced his retirement, ARod then got mad when he didn't make an appearance in Sunday or Tuesday's games. He finally got a PH appearance in yesterday's game but its clear he won't start a game until Friday. Girardi backtracked and said he was caught up in emotions and that winning was his #1 priority.

Now apparently ARod asked Girardi to play 3rd base on Friday and Joe said no.

I would imagine there are some pretty big bonuses/incentives in his contract for reaching 700 HRs that the Yankees don't want to pay either?

Nah, the next bonus he would get would be for hitting 714

And it's only $6M. Which is peanuts to both A-Rod and the Yankees.

Yeah, I would have asked him if he finally wanted to start a game at SS for the Yankees, let him play there for an inning and then shifted him to third. Who the hell cares at this point?

I was looking up the players left from the 90s:

Alex Rodriguez 1994 41

Bartolo Colon 1997 43

Carlos Beltrán 1998 39

Adrian Beltre 1998 37

David Ortiz 1997 40

A.J. Pierzynski 1998 39

Joe Nathan 1999 41

and realized that ARod is the last player active who debuted prior to the 1994 MLB strike.

There are now no active players who debuted before my intern was born.

I'm so horsefeathering old.

Bowden says A-Rod is going to the Marlins to play 1B. Just has to clear waivers today
