Now 12-16 in one run games and 3-4 in extra innings. Not a good sign.

those are actually signs of little to nothing, as they are pretty close to .500, but having especially bad records in those situations would actually be a good "sign" typically.

This game wasn't extra innings

and mediocre records in close games and extra innings aren't really predictive of much.

Pretty awful game from Joe. Hope someone asks him some tough questions.

Lots to be disappointed with. jake starts laboring after 5 innings again, continued struggles with getting runners in scoring position home, struggles with making outs on the basepaths, questionable joe decisions, continued struggles of Heyward

On the plus side some clutch hitting in the 9th, Rizzo still great, montero looking alive, Grimm and Edwards looked good, and Javy raking against RHP

Also they added a literal 10 foot flame throwing goblin to the back of the pen today

Since it seems like we've been on the wrong side of fun walk off and comebacks this year i demand lots of fun and memories come playoff time.

i have a suspicion that maddon hands the keys to davey for the in game stuff fairly often (yeah, the guy who keeps bombing job interviews).

If nothing else, that made me appreciate our latest acquisition that much more.

Joe wouldn't have pitched him either. He's going to lose us a playoff series pulling this horsefeathers.

In a playoff series he might and if he doesn't Rondon or Strop is almost certainly in. #TrickleDownBullpenOmics

It's the easiest thing in the world. Pitch your best reliever in the 9th of a tie game on the road to maximize your chances of making it to extras. Your goal is to extend the game. How the hell don't more managers realize this? It's like a 0.5 on the complexity scale.

at least one of your best relievers...not like 5th or 6th.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I feel like Maddon is usually pretty good about using Rondon or Strop in those kind of situations. I don't remember him pulling this Bryan Price stuff which is why I'm pretty confused about what just happened.

I just don't get the Heyward drop-off. His OPS is currently 76 points below his career low and 136 points below his career average. Interestingly enough, his batting average and on base percentage are virtually identical to his career low season. The difference is all in slugging percentage.

Any chance this Montgomery guy was only good because he played in giant ballparks out west or am i just annoyed that he's sucked in both outings with us

Wonder what our ratio of walk off wins to walk of losses is

Gotta be like 1:6

That would be because at home, we usually have more runs than our opponent by the middle of the 9th and you can't win via walkoff on the road.

In that 15 inning game vs Cincinnati he went to Rondon in the 8th with a 1 run lead (he blew it) and he pitched the 9th as well

With 1 out, a guy on 2nd, a righty at the plate and a lefty on deck, he probably should have walked the righty.

If players having mental issues after moving to a big/high pressure market is genuinely a thing, then effective therapists are the new market inefficiency.

(Only half kidding. Mental issues are the only reasonable explanation for good players going to horsefeathers immediately after a trade/signing, assuming they're not in a period of decline).

I just thing his swing/timing mechanism(s) are just all out of fuckig whack. The big question for me is if it's something he's consciously trying to mess with or subconsciously doing

Pressure is definitely a thing and could be a factor but then again. A player deals with lots of pressure on this sport from the minors on up. Heyward would have dealt with similar pressure coming up as such a hyped up prospect so i don't know. I could see getting off to a slow start and then dealing with bad luck getting to his head especially with the constant criticism that he didn't deserve his contract.

I'm surprised he hasn't heard boos at Wrigley. If the division lead dwindles he very well might.

had two relievers who strike out over 35% of hitters in the pen, used neither

And just think, tomorrow Joe will have 3 relievers who K over 35% of hitters that he can leave on the bench in the 9th inning of a tie game.

Seeing as the inning started with a lefty, and a bad one at that, nobody can blame Maddon for having Montgomery start the inning off. But once he got on, that should have been it for him.

With the addition of Chapman not sure Montgomery belongs on the roster with Grimm and Edwards pitching well

You're probably right. I mean he's been very good this season, but his 1st two games as a Cub haven't gone very well, so we should just keep Clayton Richard instead. At least we know he's awful, so we won't be let down.
