I'm come to the conclusion that Theo isn't just assuming we have the division won and dipped into his farm system to get two relievers and shore up what is considered the weakest spot on our team. So the playoffs are a crapshoot thing doesn't apply.

I agree to a point, but I also think that while Theo saw a chance to make the team much better, he also wanted to keep the best closer in this era away from other teams. The Giants are 1.5 games behind the Cubs for the best record in baseball, yet have 18 blown saves this season. That stat was so crazy when I heard it I had to look it up. If they were even middle of the pack we're looking up at them in overall standings.

CUBS have 10

Lack of an extension really killed my excitement for this deal. Can't believe that two months of Chapman costs Torres, McKinney, Warren, and some dude I've never heard of.

There's some extra value in that making this deal prevents the Cards, Nats, Giants, Dodgers, etc. from getting him. And I'm really going to enjoy having him in the playoffs. This is a big overpay, though, and I can't imagine that any other team was offering anything close to this. I guess if you're going to overpay, its best to overpay for an elite performer at a position of need, so at least there's that. I hope this douche doesn't beat any women while he's here.

I'm probably repeating myself, but there's 41 pages here. It seems like most people who are unhappy about the pure baseball side of this is that there's no extension. But seems to me like there's still a pretty good chance that one happens.

From all the reports, it sounds like the Cubs want to sign him long term. Maybe that's a 4/60 deal or maybe they're willing to go more years and money. He's 28, so you figure they could easily give him 5 years or even 6 without too much of a sweat.

And that's especially the case if they want to try him as a starter. If they wanted him to start, I'd think a longer term deal would get the most out of his prime and more of the years where he's up and running as a full season starter. And if it came to a bidding war I'm sure there would be a willingness to go higher in AAV for those teams who thought he could start. That would natural eliminate some teams from the bidding war.

So I'm still at a spot, speaking strictly in baseball value terms, where I don't know how the Cubs did. If Chapman was on a contract that had 4-5 years left after this one and 15-20 million AAV, and the Cubs thought he could be a starter down the road, what kind of package would that bring in?

I know I'm making a lot of leaps here with the idea that getting Chapman in the door gives us a great inside edge on getting him extend, then the idea that he could be a starter. But basically, I think this thing hasn't shaken out yet and it's not a given that he won't be extended. Also not a given that he isn't the long term starter some people wanted to save Torres for.

Personally, I'm not sure this is the guy I want to see for 7 innings every fifth day for the next 4-5 years, but again just trying to evaluate the thing in pure baseball terms and I could see where that could be the Cubs plan.

Haha ok then. Feel free to forget everything I just said and evaluate the trade based on the merits of half a season of Chapman. Certainly the points about keeping him away from the Giants and Nats sound like a good start.

Anyone posting anything trying to excuse or downplay Chapman's actions can go horsefeathers themselves. You're part of the problem concerning DV and athletes/celebrities. I ignored a lot of garbage players and rooted for them as a kid because I didn't know any better. But I'm a horsefeathering adult now and I'm livid that the Cubs would trade for this POS human being. He will just be a nameless player on this team to me. What a slap in the face (no pun intended) to female Cubs fans. But I'm sure the Cubs won't have any problem trying to profit off women with pink gear (maybe a pink Chapman shirsey?) and Mother's Day uniforms in the future.

I 100 percent respect you for this position. But now that the Cubs are part of the problem, it feels like you too are part of the problem if you watch another game this season or do anything to support them.

Thank you for telling me what to think. I wasn't sure before, but now I know. Please post your thoughts on EVERYTHING so I'll know how to think in the future.

Don't be asses. Feeling bad about picking up a guy with his history is perfectly justified.

I was being sincere. He said we are part of the problem when it comes to DV and athletes. And he was vocal in his disdain for the organization to pick him up. Which is totally cool.

But then doesn't he himself enable by continuing to support the team? Chap being faceless to him doesn't change the fact that he is on this team. Let your voice be heard by tuning out until he's gone.

She. And the post says you're part of the problem if you're trying to excuse or downplay Chapman's actions.

I wasn't trying to be an ass. If people want to be ticked off about having Aroldis Chapman on the roster, that's fine by me.

Some of the facts in this incident are irrefutable. Others are sketchy at best.

My take: I'm not about to let bygones be bygones. I'm going judge Chapman by the way he conducts himself from here on out based on what happens next. How he conducts himself. Not on the field, but off. The leash will be very short. VERY short.

And I'll be damned if I'm going to feel bad about it because someone else told me so.

Sorry about the gender part.

I really do respect and admire the thoughts. But I guess I still standby the fact that supporting the team and giving them your money or watching the games and the TV Ads they sell is only going to encourage them to do whatever they want.

And Chapman is only being able to do this because others in power are letting him. No player on the roster has used his platform to speak out on DV or that Chapman shouldn't be here. It would be tough and it would be uncomfortable, but they too are part of the problem by not saying something. David Ross supported the move to the media. Rondon said you have to get somebody like Chapman when you can. By nobody speaking up, they are making it OK to have him on the team.

I hope this makes sense. If not, I apologize.

I agree that part of the lack of general excitement is due to chapman's past. However I think part of the issue is that when you picture who is on the mound for the final out of the world series it just "feels right" to see someone like Rondon who was "homegrown" or part of the rebuild and not a "rental". That's why the extension mattered too. For how exciting a world series would be, forever having Chapman as the center of the celebration on the mound would look out of place. It makes me wonder if in that spot Rondon would get the call if the game was in hand.

I mean, Chapman served a 30 game suspension. How long should he be suspended for accusations? Lifetime ban?

Almost all jobs judge you based on a background check. The only thing that matters is convictions. MLB is already going a step further by punishing players who were accused but not convicted. I just don't know what more people want.
