The unthinkable, an ESPN writer suggests the Angels should trade Trout with Cubs as a possible landing spot

Man, I hope his contract does knock the asking price down. I mean, it will for sure. But maybe it knocks the asking price down more than it should. For one, it might knock some teams out of the bidding altogether. So now you are limited to trading with good teams (or teams trying to be good), but just the ones that have money. You also are limited to trading with the few in that group that have the resources to acquire him. And then you are limited further to the ones that still value him highly at that salary, and with the cost it would take to acquire him.

So, the trade partners are going to set the market, like in any trade. But, in this trade, with all its nuances, it becomes even more critical how other teams value him. At some point, the Angels will just say, "horsefeathers you guys; we'll just keep him."

So hopefully Theo can gauge the market properly. And basically I just want him on the phone with the Angels every single day for as long as Trout is on their roster.

also, i've said this before but i see it being a near-zero chance that Arte's willing to give him away to the Dodgers, which knocks out the biggest threat right away

i'm not optimistic he ever gets traded, though; we're mostly being unreasonably vulturous here

I'm not optimistic of him getting traded either, mainly because of how unique this situation is. It will be hard to navigate those waters.

But, holy horsefeathers, can you imagine how crazy the drama will be once we start seeing more smoke, and the rumors start flying around?

I wonder how lopsided a situation would have to occur before the Commissioner comes in and just doesn't approve a trade, like when Chris Paul to the Lakers was vetoed on extremely flimsy grounds. I don't think Trout to the Cubs would create such a situation, but it did kickstart a process in my brain thinking about how such a situation would come about.

Ah, that wouldn't happen in baseball. That happened in the NBA because the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) were owned by the NBA at the time, and that gave unique veto powers to D. Stern. Personally, I think he actually did the right thing. Whether he had the right to do that as Commissioner is another matter...That original trade was pretty bad for the Hornets and was a 3-team trade. Yeah, the Lakers would've gotten C. Paul, but I'm pretty sure they still wouldn't be title contenders so who cares?

The M. Trout trade will be different and the Angels will get a good return, if not a GREAT return in prospects and young MLB talent.

As a Laker fan, that veto was complete BS. Their trade offer at the time and even now being able to look back on it was better than what the Clippers gave up for Paul. Stern vetoed it for personal reasons against Kupchak and the Buss family after the CBA/strike and wanting to limit "super teams" after LBJ went to Miami. It was not for basketball reasons. Not that I'm still salty about it or anything.

I guess A-Rod was the last time it happened.

Yeah, ARod would have to be the closest comp. ARod was older, but only going into his age 28 season. He had 7 years and $179M left on the deal with the opt out, so realistically, 4/$98M. He played a premium defensive position and had averaged about 9 WAR the previous four years.

Miguel Cabrera was arguably the best hitter in the National League and was traded for a bunch of junk at the age of 24.

Actually he was traded for a couple top prospects in A. Miller and C. Maybin and a few lesser prospects. The trade looks bad in retrospect, but at the time the prospect package was considered very strong. A. Miller was considered a TOR LHP prospect and C. Maybin was also highly rated.

It should also be noted LHP - D. Willis was included in the trade with M. Cabrera...
