Schwarber and Baez are mashing, but their approaches are more impressive than their numbers

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/schwarber-and-baez-are-mashing-but-their-approaches-are-more-impressive-than-their-numbers/

honestly if these two are taking real steps to being elite offensive players (not to mention how immensely valuable javy becomes given his defense too), i can't really comprehend what this offense is going to look like through the summer months. (and then imagine adding bryce harper to that).

is it even possible to add a competent heyward on top of that?

holy crap.

Would love to now see these guys hit better against pitchers they struggle with historically

Schwarber vs. LHP: .077/.250/.154/.404 (16 PA)

Almora vs. RHP: .278/.297/.333/.631 (37 PA)

Baez actually has reverse splits this year, is mashing righties (1.344 OPS) but struggling against lefties (.513 OPS)

Obviously all SSS stuff, but if Schwarber is going to be an elite hitter he needs to at least be adequate against lefties.

Edit: Also not to hijack a Javy thread but Schwarber now has 300 PAs since coming up from the minors last year (regular season only). His line in those 300 PA?

Getting off topic, but in 2019 a league average Heyward in center, Harper in right, and Almora getting starts for Heyward or Schwarber every time they face a lefty sounds pretty ideal. Find a taker for the last year of Zobrist's deal (or he might retire depending on what this year's team does). Happ becomes the 'odd man out'...but seems like the ideal guy for that role with his flexibility and team control.

Good news on the Schwarber front, he's actually been pretty awesome against lefties but the results don't show it because of SSS.

His wOBA against lefties is .200 but his xwOBA is .422. His xwOBA against lefties last year was .281. He's hitting the ball really hard against them, at 94.1 mph -- even harder than he is hitting the ball against righties in the early going. Last year his avg. exit velocity against lefties was 86.1 mph. He's had a couple line outs that have sunk his early numbers. And the best part, he has a 31.3% K% against lefties, but he's actually made contact on 78.6% of his swings against them. Last year he was at 63.1%. Seems like sequencing has got the best of him in a handful of ABs, included a few called strike threes.

Almora's probably always going to kinda suck against righties, though -- at least the ones with decent breaking stuff.

Wait until Russell starts donging to go with a 10%/17% BB/K.

The "Happ is a serial killer" meme is weirdly less fun when he sucks. Maybe because it kinda seems like a natural outlet for his frustration.

Hilariously, Happ is still playing at a 3+ WAR clip.

I wish Joe would let Kyle hit against lefties more often. Didn't Schwarber put in a ton of work in the offseason to hit lefties better?

you can’t just go from a batting cage to hitting big league pitching. smoltz told us that about kyle in cleveland in 2016 ya dingus

He has 16 PAs against them this year, Javy and Almora (whom you'd always assume is playing vs LHP are only in the low-mid 20s). He's getting chances.

What I love about this team is that the following players have the ability to carry the rest of the offense for week-long stretches:

Bryant

Baez

Rizzo

Schwarber

Russell

Contreras

Really takes the pressure off everybody. Nobody has to be the guy even though many would be for other teams.

Javy only swung at 3 pitches tonight. I figured this was a career low for any game he started. But there was a game on 9/22/2015 in which Javy also only swung at 3 of 12 pitches. That game was also a shutout of the Brewers.

The '15 game was a near immaculate game at the plate for Javy, as he swung at all 3 pitches in the strike zone and let all 9 out of the zone pass. But the stupid ump, being a stupid ump, punished young Javy's patience by calling 3 of them strikes.

After his shocking restraint led to an 0-3 night with a K, one can't fault Javy for never taking a pitch for the next 2 years.

I checked the game thread for that game and nobody even mentioned anything about Javy because some guy was busy compiling 11 K's in a CGSO, lowering his ERA to 1.88 and locking down the Cy Young award.

Anyway, Javy continues showing signs of growth at the plate. I can't believe this dude is able to recognize pitches. He has to be terrifying to pitch to right now.

He took a 1-2 or 2-2 cutter/slider vs Anderson tonight (I think his 2nd AB) off the outside corner that was a pretty good pitch but not really hittable that I'm certain he's swung at 99.9% of the time in his career so far.

Edit: It was his 3rd AB

Yep it is really fun to watch him these days, uh, yeah... The NFL draft was fun, really worth spending the next few months paying attention that.

Please by all the baseball gods old & new, no article from Duke about our Golden Javy. Must distract, must distract.

I was watching at a bar, and I was talking to the guy next to me and we both commented that was a pitch javy always swung at before and how great it is to see him take those pitches now.

He still seems to swing at almost every 3-2 pitch if it's even remotely close to the zone though, but if he maintains this approach, I won't complain about that (too much)

Yeah that’s the next step hopefully that he starts walking a little, I’d agree it seems he’s swinging no matter what on 3-2 still.
