can you have a career as a major league outfielder who occasionally catches without a meniscus?

that's a really fast recovery if you remove it. and, as we saw with rose, it can present a lot more complications if you repair it.

it's not like he needs to be jumping 40" soooo...

I had my lateral meniscus removed (his would be the medial). Squatting is torture.

Guys, good news. I've given it a lot of thought, and I've decided he's going to be fine. Positivity! He'll miss 6-8 weeks max. Feel free to come back and heart this post when this post is confirmed.

My next door neighbor played with Schwarbs at IU and is waiting on a text back right now.

I've been trying to get the IU Alumni Association's Philly chapter to do a Schwarbs Meet and Greet when the Cubs come to town. Assuming he's not back by early June, when the Cubs visit.

Think about it this way...

There is at least a slight chance that Soler has a breakout year with the dongs. There is at least a slight chance that Baez has a breakout year with the dongs. Between the two of them, I'd say there is a reasonable chance that one of them has a breakout year with the dongs. So, even if Schwarber dies during surgery due to an allergic reaction to anesthesia, we should still get some power out of left field.

Hopefully they give him the expensive anesthesia instead of the cheap stuff so he has a better chance of survival.

yeah none of that generic crap. brand name anesthesia. same goes for all the gauze and stitches and stuff. don't want him to get infected or for it to be a shoddy repair.

Honestly, the biggest hit to the team's overall chances is that trading one of Soler/Baez for pitching becomes a much dicier proposition, and even that's not a lock to be needed if you're remotely optimistic about Warren(or unless one of Arrieta/Lester go down long term).

i figure there's enough in Iowa to get a deal done for a good starter anyway. especially/hopefully when some of our prospects add even more their value with a few good months of play.

It probably depends on the details. One of the reasons I like trading for Gray(outside of him being feasibly available) is that Beane likely won't be as insistent on MLB/MLB ready guys as other GMs. If the Indians tank the first half and think about trading Carrasco, then I'm pretty sure Soler or Baez is a hard requirement given how much of our Top 10 is below AA.

Losing Schwarber to a combo of Soler/Baez more starts for La Stella and all I dont think can cost us more than 1-2 wins. The 2.2 WAR projection for Schwarber may be a bit pessimistic, but I don't think he was going to give us anything approach 5+ WAR, if he gave us the .850 OPS of last year plus minus defense that's roughly what I was expecting for this year.

I also may think much more positively of Soler and Baez than some on these boards though.

i always thought tree was doing a bit when he'd make those panicky alarmist threads over the last few years when we sucked or weren't yet established to be ridiculously awesome

all i said was that i thought this was an actual bad thing for the team and i was surprised no one else thought it mattered beyond making the team less fun. i didn't start a new fatalism thread and scream about 3-159. that was the bit. this is how i honestly feel, and i don't think it's an outlandish opinion.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Schwarber will be day-to-day and return on Wednesday April 13th, next game after opening day.

At this point I think a severe sprain and out for a month is probably the best case scenario.

i don't really think the division is close enough to worry about any peril there. especially since schwarber was probably like our 5th best regular and, while the replacements aren't great (or him), he's not being replaced by like jason dubois or bobby scales or something either.

i think you guys are nuts. best case scenario is he sees the field this season.

One thing I should mention, since we're still on the subject, is that my views on western medical practice COMPLETELY reverse when it comes to pro sports. When it comes to things like broken bones, torn ligaments, etc... that's the stuff where doctors really know their horsefeathers. Also, as far as the conspiracy aspect, that goes away entirely. Know why? When it comes to athletes, the big money actually IS in keeping them healthy and getting them back on the field/court as soon as possible.

Ah so my orthopedic surgeon wasn't trying to fix my humerus that snapped in half then. Is my arm gonna spontaneously combust someday since I'm not a pro athlete?

You don't necessarily have to be a pro athlete for my statement to apply. I have broken bones before, and you're damn right I went to the doctor. I'm not gonna set my broken leg myself.

I'm no doctor, but I always thought one of the most telling signs of a torn ACL is not being able to bend your knee 90 degrees. Schwarber's knee is pretty close to that when he's sitting on the cart...
