He asks, a week later.

Sorry I haven't been refreshing my browser every 5 minutes due to the pandemic and life and such things. I haven't been on here as much as I used to lately due to circumstances.

Was trying to just be a part of the conversation, I guess. My bad.

I remember sensing the tide turning in late 2014. First, IIRC, it was Alcantara (lol) and Hendricks getting called up around the same time. Then Javy which was super exciting until he started striking out in 80% of his PAs. Then Soler came up and did crazy awesome things. Rizzo had turned it around after a really crappy 2013 and Starlin was showing signs of life. Oh, and Arrieta was pitching like a Cy Young contender while nobody was looking.

It was this weird sort of fun payoff to actually paying attention to the team while they sucked ass to sort of see the tidal wave of awesome just starting to form at the end of that year (even though, as tends to happen, some of the guys who were doing well at that point ended up being not so great and other guys ended up being awesome).

I looked up the box score, and on top of Hendrick's debut it was Alcantara's 2nd day in the big leagues. He went 4/5 (after in 0-fer in his debut).

100% this. I felt like I was in on a secret and it was so much fun.

Jake was the icing on the cake for me to believe they were really gonna be special once they added KB and hopefully a TORP in FA. He was just nasty and he almost no-hit the Cardinals IIRC, which just kind of gave you chills.

Jake’s run is still horsefeathering insane. Don’t think we’ll ever get that feeling again where you know pitcher is going 7+ and if the offense gets to 2-3 runs we are going to win. I remember games we scored 1 in the first he started and it was like “well this is over.”

One of those games was the 2015 Wild Card game that singlehandedly ended the Pirates' mini-window. It felt well in hand at 1-0 in the first, then Schwarber making it 3-0 in the third felt like a dagger.
