I want Dex back. Will he get a 5-year deal from someone?

4/60 is about as high as I'd be willing to go, that 5th year would definitely be a deal breaker for me. With that said, I wouldn't at all be surprised if Dex lands in any of BAL,NYM or STL.

I'd give it to him probably, if that's what it took to keep him. Hell, front load it, take advantage of the kids still costing the minimum. It'd make it slightly easier to unload him in the latter part of it too.

I like Almora. I don't think he's ready for a 600PA season. If we do lose Dex, I hope we find someone that can play CF in a pinch......

Yes, Heyward can play CF. But he's much more of an asset in RF defensively. Realistically, it wouldn't shock me if 2017 Almora/Heyward play to about the same offensive numbers as 2016 Dex/Heyward. All that'd take is Heyward coming close to being his pre-2016 self and Almora being no worse than Heyward this year.

At any rate, we have a strong OF defense if its got Heyward in RF. If he's in CF and being flanked by 2 of Soler, Schwarber, or Zobrist, the D takes a hit for sure.

If Dex leaves, I hope we use Almora half the time or so in CF, with Heyward getting the other games there. That'd at least help get Soler some AB's, if he's still here.

With Dexter, it's very hard for me to reconcile how much I like him with how it probably doesn't make sense for the Cubs to give him a big contract. Just seems like there's literally nothing not to like about him (unless you want to MAGA or something maybe).

This is a great post that perfectly captures my feelings on Dexter.

Us meatbags gotta pee sometime.

^^^^

Was peeing during game 7 HR

So was I! I didn't realize the bumped up start time by 6 minutes. I heard noise on the TV, stopped midstream, opened the door and saw Dex rounding the bases.

Dex should absolutely go and get paid, and it should probably not be the Cubs that do said paying - but god damn I'm going to miss his smiling face.

Cubs are giving Dex a QO according to Heyman who now works for something called FanRag.

I hope Dex had a good enough season that he doesn't get screwed by the QO process again if the Cubs choose not to re-sign him.

If he can't get paid after a 4.7fWAR season in only 120ish games then something is very very broken in the system both rules wise and talent evaluation wise.

Law has Dex as his #2 free agent this offseason behind Cespedes. What Fowler did this year was extraordinary and like Tryp said, if he can't get a deal after the season he had then the system is messed up. No reason a team wouldn't be willing to give up 4 or 5 years for a guy like Dex. Last year it made sense that teams were cautious on him. He had a bounce back year with the Cubs and prior to that showed he was not all that good defensively and had up and down offensive seasons. The fact that he showed his bounce back was legit, and then he went out and improved on it this year, should be all the fuel teams need to not worry about the QO.

Tall, athletic, switch hitting centerfielders that can get on base and flash nice power seem pretty rare. I feel like we should try to get him on a healthy 3 year deal with a 4th year kicking in after benchmarks, but I imagine someone else out there way outbids us.

The guys at MLBTR are predicting Fowler to get a 4 yr, $62mm deal. I would be fine with him at that price, even a little more.

A. His skill set is not likely to significantly decline, even if he regresses a little he would still be good

B. It would allow Heyward to stay in right, and keep a solid defensive outfield even with Schwarber in left.

C. It would lock down the top half of the order for the next four years (Fowler, Schwarber, Bryant, Rizzo; with Zob being in the 5th spot for the time being, but Contreras, Heyward, Russell able to move in as they develop/bounce back)

D. It would allow the Cubs to move Soler/Almora etc for a pitcher/pitchers

I have no problem offering him Zobrist type money. 4/56-60

I wonder if he would take that to stay with the Cubs.

My guess is the Cubs would take him back at 2 or maybe even 3 years. I think it's the 4th year and beyond that they'd have no interest in.

Dex always just seemed like a good guy and a good piece to have on the team. I was kinda ambivalent before sprint training last year as to whether having him mattered much. As the year as gone on, he has slowly become one of my favorite Cubs and by default one of my favorite ball players altogether. Not sure if we will bring him back, but if it can be done on something short term, I hope we do.

Probably the best example of that occurred right before Game 7. An hour or so before the first pitch — in what would be the biggest game of all our lives — my teammates and I were back in the clubhouse … all huddled together …

Playing Mario Kart.

At first it just started out with a few guys. But before long everyone was in on it. No one wanted to lose, because it was one of those things like, you lose … you’re out. Next guy steps in for you.

And the crazy thing was, it seemed like each guy had the best Mario Kart races of his life that night. Riz, Tommy La Stella, everyone was at their career-best level. It was impressive.

In retrospect, maybe that was a good omen.

I’m not saying that Mario Kart was the key to our trophy or anything. But, you know, a few hours later we were world champs.
