What a cruel thing to do to Cardinal fans on the day after the Cubs win the WS.

Haha, seriously. I'm guessing it wasn't intended as a thunder-stealing move (I certainly hope it wasn't), but if it were that's about the last thing most of their fans want to see right now.

I think most of us Cardinal fans are fine with Matheny. He isn't perfect and needs to improve but it's hard to argue with the results so far. It's the vocal minority who will be up in arms over this. Then again, they were the same with LaRussa. Basically if the Cardinals don't win the WS every year they will be upset.

Matheny is garbage.

Good friend of mine is a Cardinal fan that has hated Matheny all year long, and now he says "Well if last night's game is any indicator, managing is meaningless...talent is everything." I mean, he's not wrong...but the timing of that rationalization amuses.

GRB was pretty good about it but the real highlight was a guy saying

"Cubs destroyed their own legacy. In a few years, no one will care about this win, and they'll have lost what makes them unique."

i'm sure the stands will be empty now that we'll be winning all the time with a bunch of likable great young players

I'm guessing GRB will care about the Cubs just a little bit as they kick the piss out of the Cards for the foreseeable future.

They didn't invent that line of thinking, of course. People said the same garbage about Boston and, oh look, turns out a big-market team that competes consistently is still pretty freaking popular even if there's no stupid curse narrative in the national media.

Ram23 wrote: This is an odd post. If you don't become a fan of a team because of geographical proximity then how do you expect teams to attract fans to the games? Then you go on to say you wish the majority of Illinois in terms of geography rooted for the Cubs. So you just contradicted yourself in one paragraph. Lastly, St. Louis is no better or no worse than other cities with Sports teams. When they win they show up, when they lose they don't. Just like anywhere else.

I didn't say I don't understand how fans become fans because of geographical proximity. For most of Illinois, the closest team is not Chicago, but St. Louis. What I'm getting at is I suppose I feel like if you're from Illinois you should be inclined to root for a team in your state, even if it is on the other side of the state. Then again, St. Louis is on the border of Illinois and is closer to many people. I get it. Geographical proximity is big factor, but I don't think it should be the overriding factor. I don't want to start talking about why Chicago is the superior city or denigrate the fanbase of St. Louis right now. Deadspin and plenty of other websites already do that.

I wish the majority of Illinois rooted for the Cubs -- you're right. I wish the majority of the Midwest rooted for the Cubs as well. I mean the Chicago Cubs have fans from all over the country. Anyway, if you want to defend St. Louis then go ahead...

You know what gets talked about all the horsefeathering time like it happened yesterday in mainstream baseball media? The 2004 Red Sox, 12 years later. People will always care about historic victories.

Two things can happen, This will be remembered as the first in a string of World Championships, in which case it will always be the most important or it will be the only world championship we get out of this group. Either way, this will be the one that people will talk about.

My bro in law is a Cardinals fan and he actively rooted against the Cubs on facebook all playoffs. He reached his excitement peak when the Indians went up 3-1. He still talked trash after the Cubs won and his facebook page is hilarious now.

I'm not one for rubbing stuff in, I care that my team won for my happiness not others sadness, but he was so obnoxious in the playoffs people are plastering his facebook page for a couple days now. Surprised he hasn't deactivated.

Come on, that has to be a parody of BFIB-type nonsense, right? How is that possibly serious?

I wonder when people started breathing, it just seems like an unnecessary display of living. Can't people, you know, not breathe like they used to do in the old days? I don't believe the Bible discusses breathing and Jesus I bet hated the practice.
