According to Schefter on ESPN a little while ago, it has a whole lot more to do with nagging injuries than anything else and he actually discussed it with people before the season with the mindset that this year would be his last and asked them to keep it quiet.

"FINALLY, more Thursday games" - no one

I don't think its' more. They are just splitting them differently. There may be more late season Saturday games.

Correct. Instead of 8 CBS/8 NFLN-only, it's now 5 CBS/5 NBC/6 NFLN, plus Saturday/etc games.

So this is probably a net positive, as it means less Nantz/Simms.

NFL splitting Thursday from 8 games on CBS to 5 each for CBS and NBC, $450m for that little chunk of games.

this should mean a vastly improved slate of games as compared to when it was just NFLN taking crap games nobody wanted and throwing them on thursday.

the problem for me with thurs night football was the shitty matchups. if they're good games, i welcome more days with NFL games (shitty as it is for the teams themselves and the short weeks and all that).

Spanos is playing nice with San Diego to screw the Raiders and San Diego. The Raiders don't have a place to play. If the Chargers announce LA, they will have to be the 4th team playing out of the Coliseum next year along with Rams, UCLA and USC. That's a scheduling nightmare, and it won't really be all that popular for the Chargers since they will be out of their market and 4th in popularity at that location. If they announce LA, the Raiders will move to San Diego immediately because Qualcomm is still inhabitable. The Chargers don't want that third team in SoCal because it hurts their share of the market long term. They will only be leasing in LA, so they are only renters with no home of their own.

Spanos is probably just going to spin the team once they get to LA next year. San Diego isn't being fooled by Spanos. He's only making nice in hopes that people buy tickets to games. He's definitely out of here unless the city ponies up for a stadium, which they have yet to do before the threat to LA was real. This has been crazy to watch unfold. If Spanos was willing to let a new stadium be built in the parking lot of Qualcomm, the chances of getting some city backing could happen. But, he's absolutely standing his ground that he wants a downtown stadium because he wants tailgaiting to go away, which is a huge tradition in this town.

So he waits it out a full year and jumps at the very last chance?

Deadspin commenter wisdom:

Think about what a colossal horsefeathers head you have to be to “undermine the reputation” of the Cleveland Browns.

UCLA plays at the Rose Bowl, not the Coliseum.

NFL gave Spanos until March of '17 to make a commitment. The next year will be very interesting to watch unfold.

Why does he want to get rid of the tailgating? That seems like a really weird reason to refuse to work with the city to get a brand new stadium.

Owners do not like people bringing their own costco purchased beer and hot dogs and grilling them in the parking lot. They prefer people come into the stadium and buy $12 beers and $8 hot dogs from them.

Yea, I know that Oakland is fighting to keep tailgaiting, but thats probably the exception. Probably due in large part that Mark Davis is more of a fan and inherited the team.
