Well this sucks on two levels. I wanted McGee for the Cubs and I'm sure Honeywell is likely going to COL which makes him useless in my dynasty league.

Who knows maybe the Rockies will spin him off in a separate deal

Sources: Second pitcher going to #Rockies along with McGee is not considered one of #Rays’ top 10 prospects. Do not yet know name.

So the Rockies now have the best veteran LHRP in the NL. I wonder if that will draw any interest and might net them more upside and quantity than one platoon OF for 4 years in a trade?

To me that's tantamount to having a valuable old baseball card, then selling it for Bitcoin so you can reap the rewards if Bitcoin's value takes off. If you're trying to get arbitrage by trading the existing player, it probably doesn't make sense to first put that player's value into a much more volatile form(pitcher, reliever, reliever w/ recent injury, reliever w/ recent injury and not cheap or controlled long term) before getting what you actually want.

My first reaction to this was of excitement, thinking the Rockies would immediately flip him for prospects. The tone doesn't appear as if that's likely though and the Rockies aren't exactly smart anyway.....

At any rate, I'd still love to get McGee somehow.

OTOH, they wouldn't have gotten Mcagee at that price without taking on some risk. Rockies are basically betting they sold high on Dickerson, thanks in part to the value teams put on control, and he's more Seth Smith than Matt Holliday. A reliever with McGee's velocity and career level of performance easily sells for more. It's a risk worth taking for a rebuilding team with an extra, cheap platoon COF to sell, even if unconventional.

McGee is real good, but I don't think he's amping up his trade value all that much. For as much as he can prove he's healthy, he's a guy you have for maximum 1.5 years when he gets dealt. With that in mind, if the idea is selling high on Dickerson, then you should either get someone who you have longer time for their value to appreciate, or just get the type of player you want all along instead. But this is the Rockies so they seem cursed to live indefinitely in a state where they are not good but act like they need to put finishing touches on a contender.

He doesn't have to amp, he has to show up healthy. He's performed among the elite relievers in the league since 2012 - top 10 in K%-BB%, FIP, FB velocity...If Dickerson is valued more like a Seth Smith, it's not so likely they could just get the type of player they wanted all along -or the type of trade in general. I'd say a first division player like McGee, even a mere reliever, is a pretty strong outcome for them if Dickerson is more a platoon LHH bat ala Smith than the next Holliday.

To clarify, right now McGee is basically worth Dickerson(to me that's pretty fair so I don't think the Rockies did great or poorly from a pure value perspective). Whatever McGee gains from showing he's healthy(which itself is a misnomer because he still has the injury history and 30 healthy IP won't change his risk), he similarly loses because he's got 25% less team control at a minimum when he gets dealt. While Kimbrel and Giles both brought a haul in trade, both have more consistency in terms of performance, do not have McGee's injury risk, and have more team control. And for every Kimbrel there's a Clippard who while not a 1-to-1 stuff comparison, was a very good reliever for many years and was basically given away with half a season to FA.

There's no arbitrage to turning Dickerson into McGee. The Rockies did it because they think they're a contender for some reason, and they'll pay the price either in McGee's likely lower trade value when the team goes south, or in the missed opportunity now when they could have gotten someone more useful for 2017 and beyond.

It's an interesting deal, to say the least. I guess I'm with everyone that prefers this for the Rays, particularly because I like Padlo as a raw bat and am not sure Marquez is anything to write home about just yet. I think Cameron hit the point that, if you were simply going to swap out Parra for Dickerson and add McGee, why not just sign a FA reliever? I guess it's possible they are really high on Marquez, as he is the ground-ball type of pitcher that they want.

I do think this increases our chances of landing McGee at some point (and heck, for those wanting Desmond Jennings, this may even increase our chances at landing him, sure feels like another domino has to drop at some point for Tampa).

As a total side note, I'd love to bring Christian Friedrich in (minor league deal that is) and see if a change of environment can turn things around. Velocity is still there, and his splits away from Coors are decent.

I get what Gato is saying, but if I'm Colorado, I'd flip him NOW, due to injury concerns and just the possibility he could struggle. If he does pitch well though, I doubt there's much of a difference, if any, as to the value they'd get at the deadline versus now.
