I saw this quote in Deadspin....is this true? Seems plausible but you guys would know much better than I would

Not only will we almost certainly be facing Argentina, the overwhelming favorites to win the whole thing, who are so great that they left dudes home that would’ve been far and away the best American players of all time had they been born over here

No idea who that could be. Surely not Tevez?

You guys don't think Tevez is better than Dempsey or Donovan? Of course he is. I don't know how "far and away" but yeah, he's better.

Paola Dybala is too young for that convo but he'd no question be the best forward prospect we've ever had. That is some dramatic and not really relevant stuff from deadspin but it's still true.

So Belgium went from depressed to euphoric in 90 minutes yesterday.

I'm guessing the beer consumption correlated quite well ;-)

I'm no expert on US soccer players; I was just wondering who Argentina had left out that could fit the reference. As the plural was used ("dudes"), the author must have had at least one more in mind;

I want to find this amusing, but I have a sinking feeling this is how Tuesday's game will go.

It was amusing but sort of depressing for CONCACAF. That being said, Mexico played decent in the first half. I don't think the US will have nearly the possession Mexico did on Tuesday.

I just can't see the US conceding anything close to 7 goals against anyone.

Especially against a team that isnt that much more talented, if at all. That game on paper is a pick 'em or possibly Mexico as slight favorite with major home field advantage.

Mexico always does this. They get cocky, something goes wrong and they can't deal with the adversity. That's an inexcusable capitulation.

I definitely can if they can't possess the ball more than they did against Ecuador. The remaining teams have far more quality up front and the US looked pretty shaky against Ecuador.

Mexico fell into the trap when they got down 2 of pressing forward and they got burned on the counter. They actually had the pressure on quite a bit in the first half when it was 1-0 but that second goal killed them. I don't think the 7-0 tells the full story of that game - they just collapsed in the second half but they weren't overmatched in the first.

The US had the better of the run of play against Ecuador until it went to 10 v 10. Then Ecuador's speed advantage was magnified and they had way more urgency to throw numbers at the goal.

In the last month the US has given up 3 goals: a corner, a PK, and a run of play goal 10 v 10. I feel pretty good about their ability to prevent a blowout, even if odds aren't great that they win outright.

Lending credence to my conspiracy theory that a big reason mexican and american players are undervalued is because scouts only really pay attention to major tournaments, the vultures are circling again now that the spotlight is shining.

nice ending to this one, with Croatia scoring 87' to pull ahead of Spain then amusingly trying to waste as much time as possible with various substitutions and staged confusion

England blew their group yesterday by being unable to beat Slovakia. But they'll probably get lucky since it's more likely Iceland or Hungary finishes second rather than Portugal.

Spain blew their group but isn't as lucky since they'll draw Italy in the next round.

Germany pounded Northern Ireland but could only manage 1 goal and were lucky Poland only beat Ukraine 1-0 or else they could have blown their group also.

Right now on fs1, Jurgen is explaining how the us has improved in his tenure to Jason Whitlock and I almost fell off the couch lunging for the remote to change the channel.

Jason horsefeathering Whitlock.
