Pochettino is smart enough to know managing a national team is completely different from managing a club side - if indeed he makes the jump it will be interesting to see how that plays out.

Swanson’s goal probably shouldn’t have counted. Once the other woman, who was offside, runs after the ball, she’s involved in the play and that should be it. Don’t have to touch the ball to be involved in the play.

the law actually says interferes with the play - I see what you're saying but I think the call was correct. If Rodman (I think it was Rodman) isn't there, that play isn't any different

I'll self correct - its involved in active play or interferes with an opponent. I still think this call is consistent with how the law is generally applied

Which made Swansons effort doubly huge because she saw Smith going towards it and called her to get away from the play.

But it is different because Smith keeps running and actually is in the penalty area when the goal is scored. She's involved in the play. Swanson could have very easily passed the ball across for a tap in. Do we know for sure it didn't affect the movement of the Brazil defenders or the goalie? We don't. If Smith had just stopped when Swanson called her off and not continued running, I'd be more okay with letting it play out and it not being offside. Ultimately I agree with you in that the play probably doesn't go any different if Smith stops. But she didn't stop and that's the issue for me.

This happened in either a EPL or UCL game within the last two years and it was called the same way. I disagreed with that one too.

the fact that she keeps running isn't relevant - she could be standing in an offside position the whole time and would not be guilty of a violation. the only moment that matters is when the ball reaches Swanson - what she does after that isn't relevant. In fact, a 9 can just stand at the penalty spot all game long and the only thing that matters is if they are offside when the ball is played to them. with regard to a defender having to cover them - that's not relevant.

there was one in the EPL that was really egregious - I think it may have been a manchester derby - in that case, the united player ran right on to the ball and then stood next to it - similar but I thought that was offside.

"Smith said afterward that she heard Swanson shouting at her to not touch the ball because she had seen that Smith had strayed too far in front. "It was scary!" Smith joked, but she got the message and cut to the side, allowing Swanson to go ahead and score her fourth goal of the tournament."

I really hope we see the US women at Wrigley when we come back home, given the obvious connection. I would love to see the Cubs celebrate their win like they did with the Blackhawks in 2010.

This Matt Crocker guy is a big game shooter. No one, absolutely no one, would have predicted Emma Hayes and Poch at the head of our senior teams during the post-World Cup meltdowns by both squads.

i think our knock out round odds are still completely dependent on a favorable draw, but I’m psyched to see a respected outsider look at our pool objectively.

Well the entire tournament just changed for the US. Hopefully they can get a point out of this but if they don’t they are in gigantic trouble.

Just a monumentally bad decision by Weah. What the horsefeathers

It changed everything. Thank you, Timo.

Yeah seriously lol.  It still sucked to go out in the group stage of Copa, but if it leads us to success in 2026 it was well worth it.

I really have no idea how to project how 2026 will play out with all the changes to the format.  Advancing to knockouts should be a near guarantee given the fact that we'll be the Pot 1 team in our group and worst case we'd just have to be one of the 8 best 3rd place teams (out of 12) to advance.  But I have no idea what the quality of opponent will be in the round of 32.  We could play some 2nd rate AFC team that went 0-1-2 and advanced on GD or we could play an UEFA power.  Given all that and the fact that we're the host country, I think base level expectations should be round of 16, with a QF or SF appearance being a very successful tournament but who knows.

I think Emma was more predictable, her having said she wanted to coach uswnt. still, great hires and I totally agree on the pool objectivity being the biggest thing

With the expansion and the near guarantee of a cushy group (the top 9 teams will all be seeded in other groups, so they could potentially end with an Italy/Germany/Uruguay type if all the top teams qualify)

With home cup advantage and this pool of players supposedly being their best ever, anything less than a QF should be seen as a disappointment unless they play, like, Argentina or Spain or something in the R16.

Connecticut’s own Luca Koleosho off to a hot start in the champo. Occurs to me he and Poch are both Espanyol products. Let’s go ahead and finally close that commit.
