Painful to settle for 1 after having lead until the 83rd minute but that's an acceptable result. 0 would have been a complete disaster and probably cost us from advancing

Has to be said: I hate the World Cup. Too many emotions to contain when 95% of the people around you don’t even know it’s happening, why you’re worked up, and you have to do normal things like your job. Every four years the office I watch in may get a little larger and a little more private, but I am still barely able to act like a normal person while the US is playing.

Literally the only thing worse than the World Cup is your team not making the World Cup.

Disappointing af. Penalty was just unneeded panic.

Yea, overall decent performance but that is the kind of play the US has to eliminate to progress. You can't fall asleep on a throw in and then dive in like that in the box. The US also needs some more depth and I can't say I have a ton of confidence in Berhalter as disorganized as they look (though I will concede internationals don't get a ton of time to train together).

the good news is the US will be playing in prime time in the next one. But what the hell are you doing working this week?

I started an awesome new job a month ago, and felt it was just too early to take PTO. My mistake.

Second half everyone except Tyler was trash. Tyler is indisputably our best player right now. I expect a big transfer in his future.

Also, I should be allowed to smoke heaters anywhere I want during MNT World Cup games. I don’t even smoke, but I need something to do with my hands and nerves & should be allowed.

Please put all England's matches in the latest window so they have to watch in the middle of the night. Send them to Canada too and make them play in a CFL stadium

Thirded. He was all over the place and cleaning everything up. We don't get a result today without him

So assuming we lose to England, is the worst result from Iran-Wales a draw? England would wrap up the group if it’s a draw and they beat us which would mean they wouldn’t care at all about the last match. At least if Wales wins it requires England to care enough to not lose the last game. And if Iran beats Wales, then Iran will care about the last game against us since they could still advance.

So I feel like Wales beating Iran 1-0 might be the best result for us. Then as long as England beats Wales, we’re basically in the round of 16 if we beat Iran, tiebreakers pending.

That foul by Acosta at the end was so crucial.

I'm curious to see Friday's line-up. Gio needs some run.

Gio needs to see the pitch but i'd hate to burn him out friday and not have him for 90 minutes in the more important match on tuesday, but im no genius like gregg

England's second 11 would still be favored against Wales, and Iran is bad and will bunker regardless. A Wales/Iran draw would be an amazing result.

Doesn't it come down to goal difference? Am I missing something?

I don't think a win against Iran is a given for either Wales or the US. I also am not sure England is ever going to not want to beat Wales.

I didn’t mean to make it sound like Iran is just going to roll over and get 0 points. As for England-Wales, I think it matters if one of the teams needs to win and the other one is worried about not picking up stupid cards and avoiding injuries while playing it’s second string.

Would be nice if we played before Wales-Iran because then we’d have a better idea on what to root for.

And yes, first tiebreaker is overall GD and then next is goals scored.

I think Iran beating Wales is better... I gamed this out on reddit earlier:

-Wales win eliminates Iran. Iran will still have every geopolitical reason to want to play spoiler but they will be eliminated. US would have to beat Iran and hope England beats Wales and US wins GD

-A draw causes us to have to better the result of Wales in the last match with England already clinching the top spot, so England will have nothing to play for. But similar to the first scenario England will have reasons to want to beat their neighbor

-An Iran win is interesting. Iran will have everything to play for needing just a point + England getting a result vs. Wales to advance. But at the same time the US would just need to beat Iran and need England to get a result vs. Wales OR US to beat Iran by more than Wales beats england.

To me the order of preference is Iran win, draw and Wales win the least desirable.

But someone else above pointed out that Iran would bunker up for a point and I hadn't thought about that so maybe the safest is a draw.

Random but LOL at the xG for the England - Iran game

https://twitter.com/prematchodds/status/1594737886062153735

I wasn't able to watch, does Iran just have the world's worst keeper?

Their starting keeper went off with injury(concussion? broken nose? maybe both) in the first half, but xG can cut both ways. Bellingham and both Saka's goals were basically unsaveable, and Sterling and Rashford's were nearly carbon copies that had them in the clear in the box(albeit at an angle).

As a very casual pro soccer observer... that whistle to stop play when James went down after losing the 50/50 ball... is that completely ref discretion? I know that was a hard challenge, but that looked very obviously like he took a seat to avoid the counter attack. Was it just a poor decision by the ref?

That second half was so disappointing. It appeared Wales decided to aggressively overplay everything and then lay down when there was any type of contact to try to draw a whistle. US seemed to be taken out of their game by this "strategy".

Honestly, at the end of the game I thought to myself, "This must be what it feels like to play against any other US National team prior to this one."

The only time the ref is required to stop play for an injury is if there's a suspected head injury, and most refs will wait for teams to put the ball out of play or at least wait for the current phase of play to finish. This ref had more of a 'spite all teams and make everyone angry at me all the time, this is equality' approach.
