is turner really going to arsenal? why would he downgrade like that?

I’ve watched barely any premier league this year. Would he play?

Would all the people who thought Steffen was better because of the club that signs his check do an immediate 180 if he’s starting?

This transfer window is wild for Americans.

Ramsdale has been the breakout keeper of the year so Turner would be a backup/cup keeper. This apparently frees them to dump Leno.

Yes, but all the people who thought Steffen can't be on his game because he's a cup goalkeeper would have to switch too.

yeah i think ramsdale is really good but that's admittedly from me watching like 8 arsenal matches.

i kinda wonder how much turner can really improve given that he's already like 27 and kinda came outta nowhere the last few years. but still that's a nice pay bump to play in cup games and practice and suffer through shitty english food

Don't see any major surprises unless you were hoping Reyna would be on the roster.

Edit: And no Sargent

I would imagine Steffen would still be better with his feet regardless of where Turner is playing.

Big window coming up - supposed to be good and cold!

Josh Sargent just scored a goal on a scorpion kick lmao

edit: 25' later he skies over a defender with a header for a brace

on paper, that's a huge game. In reality, they're both going down. how did he manage to avoid scoring until today?

Slonina is cool because the Poland interest was real. We need to develop more keeper prospects. De La Torre is good.

I think Turner is already on the plane to Qatar, most likely as the #2, and everyone grows up wanting to play for a club like Arsenal. So if you’re already 27, and you’ve already had an incredible, unlikely rise to a level no one ever expected for you, why not go and be a back up? What a cool journey.

Weird statistical quirk (not sure if that's the right thing to call it but whatever).

Ajax is in second place in the Eredivisie, a point back of PSV, despite scoring 12 more goals than PSV and allowing 20 fewer goals than PSV. They've allowed four goals total in 19 matches this year yet somehow have only won 14 of 19 games, so more games where they didn't win than goals allowed.

after watching Barca try to play on a frozen pitch last weekend, I have to say I fall into the venues are a mistake camp. If you're the better team, play on a better pitch. At least Dest got to practice on ice.

The US can clinch a WC spot this window if:

1. They win all 3 matches AND

2. Mexico loses all 3 matches AND

3. Costa Rica does not win both of their non-Mexico matches AND

4. Jamaica loses or ties its other 2 non-Mexico matches

OR

1. They win all 3 matches AND

2. Panama loses all 3 matches AND

3. Costa Rica does not win or tie both of their non-Panama matches AND

4. Jamaica loses or ties one of their other 2 matches

OR

1. They win all 3 matches AND

2. Panama loses all 3 matches AND

3. Costa Rica wins only 1 other match in the window AND

4. Canada picks up 1 point or less this window

So you're saying there's a chance? :D

To make it less abstract, the likeliest/easiest path to qualifying this window is:

US wins all 3

Mexico wins all 3

Jamaica wins @ Panama

Jamaica wins or draws v. Costa Rica

There's only 1 game that is a fairly significant underdog in that group (Jamaica win @ Panama), but going 8 for 8 is always gonna be an extreme longshot.

We don’t have to clinch this window (obviously) but I think reasonable goals are:

1. Clinch top 4 (think we should do this barring disaster)

2. Get to a point where you can reasonably draw a path to the top 3 while only needing 2 points in the final window, meaning not a bunch of unlikely results need to happen (if that makes sense). That will probably require 7 points and some good results from other matches

Bryan Reynolds to KV Kortrijk on loan from As Roma until the end of the season.

Not an ideal destination for a young player but better than not playing in Rome, I suppose.

Here's the scenario I think is the likeliest this cycle:

US gets 7 points (W vs ES/HON, draw @CAN)

MEX gets 7 points (W vs CR/PAN, draw @JAM)

CAN gets 3-5 points (3 draws or 2 draws and a win, or W-L-D)

PAN gets 1-3 points (Draw/Win vs JAM, 2 Ls)

Which would leave the USMNT first, Mexico 2nd, Canada 3rd, with the US 5-7 points clear of 4th, needing just a win vs Panama at home in the final cycle to clinch a spot.

Looking at this again, there is a 9th outcome needed, Costa Rica wins v. Panama tonight. A draw would also keep alive the possibility of the US not mathematically qualifying, but functionally qualifying by being 9 points ahead and about 10+ goals ahead in goal differential.

Summing up, if you want the best case scenario, from today's games we need:

- US wins v. El Salvador

- Costa Rica wins v. Panama

- Mexico wins v. Jamaica*

*technically a draw would work but a win keeps margin for error in the Jamaica/CR matchup

TT I’m sorry but I am absolutely rooting for Mexico L’s. They could easily not qualify. I need that to happen. No Chucky, no Jimenez, and a slumping Funes Mori

FRACASO!

The other best case scenario is that if the US keeps winning then qualifying is not the primary concern, and having Mexico endanger themselves is 1) awesome and hilarious 2) maybe better for the US's chances at getting into Pot 1? Even if not, the disarray leading up to our trip to the Azteca bumping the win probability might be worth the marginal hurt to the FIFA ranking.

Conmebol chaos Brazil at Ecuador.

Game doesn't matter to Brazil and Ecuador is near certain to qualify also. First, it's in Quito at 9350 feet elevation.

5 minutes in, Brazil scores sloppy goal. Minutes later, Ecuador keeper comes out and kicks Brazil player in the throat when he realizes ball is outside box still and he tries to clear. Not 30 seconds after the restart, Emerson Royal tries to clear ball and kicks Ecuador player in crotch from behind getting a deserved yellow - and it's his second, so its 10v10 after 20 minutes. Not to be outdone, Allison then comes out of box and clears ball with high boot that comes down on Ecuadorean player's head - he is sent off. Only VAR review saves him and it's reduced to a yellow (I think the correct call).
