Man, talk about a perfect FJM moment:

https://deadspin.com/sports-illustrated-publishes-anonymous-scouts-tantrum-o-1833609121

Sports Illustrated published its season previews for every MLB team today, and the entry for the Philadelphia Phillies features a trip back to a time when an anonymous scout dog-whistling a non-white player was a regular genre in sportswriting.

SI asked an anonymous scout which current Phillies player he would least like to have in his own clubhouse, and the guy absolutely unloaded on outfielder Odubel Herrera:

Name the guy (or guys) on this team you would never want in your clubhouse

Herrera. I’m an old-school guy who likes guys who run balls out and run off and on the field and are focused on playing the game the right way. He’s the antithesis of Brett Gardner. He’s like a clown. From what I understand, it was a controversial signing internally, because none of their baseball people could stomach him, but Matt Klentak liked him because he’s a likable goofball kid. So they ended up putting the cash in his pocket, and what they’ve gotten out of it is a f****** dog who’s hurt them more than helped them.

This is such a horsefeathering stupid juicy meatball on, like, 18 different levels. Hot damn.

BRETT GARDNER?!? horsefeathering seriously? This is the dog whistle-est dog whistle that ever dog whistled.

Yeah, so if you ever get the chance to go to a minor league game and approach a scout... be careful. Some of them are definitely old-school conservative MAGA clowns. The younger scouts are better and that older generation is getting phased out of the game because of dog-whistling crap like that on top of the bad baseball takes and analysis.

Elvis Luciano of the Blue Jays will be the first player born in the 2000s to play in MLB.

Unless Colon finds a team there will be no players left that played in the 90s. (Beltre and Colon were the last two)

Good quote from Neal Huntington:

Unfortunately, so much of the information from the anonymous scouts appears to be based on archaic, racist stereotypes. The white players tended to be labeled as ‘gritty,’ ‘smart’ and ‘tough.’ Minority players seemed to be labeled as physically talented but maybe not the most talented, or they had their work ethic or motivation repeatedly questioned. So much of it, unfortunately, seemed to be based on archaic, racist stereotypes, which don’t have a place in our game … That preview just reinforced that they still exist and there still is a lot of work to do to rid those, not only from our game, but ideally from our society.

Lots of good stuff, but this...

[Josh] Bell, by the way, hit .261/.357/.411 with 12 home runs, 62 RBI, and 74 runs scored in 583 plate appearances last year. Not MVP numbers by any means, but above-average for sure, especially for a 25-year-old.

....ouch. No, that sucks for a full time 1B, dude.

A stat to make us all feel ancient: there are no longer any current MLB players who played in the 20th century.

I know that makes sense if you think about it, but wow, definitely makes me feel old.

Bartolo is still trying to land a role. There's still hope.
